Ulster championship preview – Meara v McCormick title decider!

PR- The 2018 Nutt Travel MRA Ulster Motocross Championships winds up at Tinker Hill Newry this Saturday for the QRI promoted final round

The Sport Insure Premier MX1 Class Championship leader and newly crowned Irish Champion Richard Bird from Lisburn on his KTM is the white-hot favourite for the double domestic crown as he leads Risk Racing Honda mounted Robert Hamilton from Ballymena by 73 points, and with only 75 available, Richard would need to have a really bad practice session to cede the Championship. Third is Loughbrickland Kawasaki man John Meara, but if he is still not recovered from his recent back injury, then he is in danger of losing the bronze medal to Jordan McCaw on his Husqvarna, who had a fantastic run at Laurel Bank, and this week in Cork, so the young Ballymoney man is on form at the moment. Ardglass man Lindsay Newell is on level points with McCaw so he may be a threat too.

The Thompson Leisure MX2 Premier Championship leader Jason Meara from Loughbrickland is only one point ahead of rival Glenn McCormick from Glenoe and this should prove to be the race of the day, with everything to play for it will be winner take all on the day. Dubliner Stephen Mullaly has had an excellent season on his Yamaha and would seem secure in third, but Aaron Gardiner on his Risk Racing Yamaha is only five ahead of Comber man David Russell, so there’s still some racing to do there too.

The Precise Protect Semi Expert MX1 Class is led by 30 points by Johnny Presho from Yamaha man Tony Conlon, with KTM mounted Ashley Allerton only 14 behind Conlon, and Clifford Wilson from Ballymena on his KTM only 3 adrift of Allerton, so expect a four way fight here as it’s not over yet here either

The Gortnacarrow Tyre Services in association with Bridgestone Semi Expert MX2 Rhys Graham on his KTM has a handy 51-point lead over Michael McAllister, who seems to have a nice buffer of 24 over the battling youngsters of Nathan Green from Ballynahinch and Dollingstowns William McBride who are tied on points in third, expect the title to come from this group as the rest are distant.

The Robinson Concrete Clubman MX1 Downpatrick man Jordan Wade on his Kawasaki leads Championship rival Calvin McCorkell by 62 points and with 75 on offer, the Downpatrick man has one hand on the gold medal, the battle for third is between Fintan Fallon, Gary McKee and Ryan Canning

Laverty Motocross Clubman’s MX2   is the only 2018 title won with Scott Bailey from Markethill clinching the title at the last round, however, the battle for second is wide open with only 17 points between Ivan Kerr from Donegal, Ruari Grimes from Lurgan, Daniel McFerran from Newcastle and Robert McAuley from Banbridge, should be fun in this always entertaining class.

The circuit is signposted on the A1 Old Belfast Rd north of Newry City and racing starts at 11.00 with entry just £5 and under 14’s free.
