Ulster Championship heads to Tinkerhill!

Words: Malcom Beattie

The 2017 Ulster Motocross Championships reach the penultimate round this Saturday 5th August at the QRI promoted event at Tinker Hill near Newry City.

The Nutt Travel Premier MX1 Class is led by Lisburn’s Richard Bird on his Five5Motorsport KTM on 281 points from Wicklow man Jim O’Neill on his similar machine on 228, so it looks like it’s the Lisburn mans title to lose, although Jim has been strong all year so it may go to the last round next month.

Greyabbey Smoke Vent KTM rider Craig Brown has closed the gap in third on 198, while Banbridge’s Ryan Adair is 41 points adrift on his Adair Building Services KTM, with Newtownards man Jordan Scott fourth on his HTM Husqvarna, and his friend David Russell in sixth.

In the Precise Protect Premier MX2 Class, Dundonald youngster James Mackrel leads the Championship by 43 points on his KTM from Dubliner Jordan Keogh on his Kawasaki, Donegal teenager Aaron Gardiner lies third on his Honda 47 point behind while David Martin on the screaming 125 Husqvarna is only 13 points off Gardiner, both these lads promotions from the Semi Experts this year are having a great season.

The Nutt Travel Semi Expert MX1 Class Josh McCorkell on his KTM leads Lurgan Man Mark Dynes on his Maralin Car Wash TW Dynes KTM by 37 points, although Mark has been seen on a Honda at some rounds and may finish the season on the Japanese machine, Kevin Donnelly 26 points behind in third, while fourth is Ciaran Boyle a huge 87 points behind.

In the Precise Protect Insurance Semi Expert MX2 Class, Kawasaki mounted Loughbrickland teenager Cailum Devlin leads on 250 points while second placed Paul Laverty is on 219, third is Rhys Graham 17 points adrift and Magherafelt teenager Jake Hall only 2 points behind him on his Husqvarna.

The Towergate Insurance Clubman MX1 Johnny Haywood has all but clinched the Championship with a 110 point lead over Lurgan’s Barry Dummigan with only 150 points available, it will take a minor miracle for Dummigan to catch the flying Haywood, he in turn has a 47 point advantage over Darren Wilkinson, with Ian Dunlop 11 behind him, and Josh Rea only a point behind Dunlop, so the final podium position is anything but safe.

The Laverty Motocross Clubman MX2 see’s Johnny Presho on his Honda stretch his advantage to 38 points over Darren McMullan with Chris Walsh slipping to third 23 points behind Walsh, Kealin McLoughlin holds onto fourth 11 points adrift and Matthew Davis & Ruari Deegan fifth & sixth.

Racing will start on Saturday at 11.00 and the track will be signposted from the A1 & old A1 road just north of Newry City entry will be £5 and under 14’s free.
