The calm before the storm

It’s mostly quiet on the supercross front right now, Ken Roczen and Justin Barcia even got married to their respective spouses last weekend in some rare time off from busy schedules.

But their free time is all about to end, the various boot camps and hard training will have or are just about to start and now that November is here, the major pre-season supercross events are about to get under way.

The Aus-X Open takes place this Saturday, the Paris supercross the weekend after and a further event in New Zealand plus the Geneva supercross will all give the riders signed-up some much needed race laps under their belt before Anaheim and some race-testing time.

Everyone then goes into lock-down again in December for their final preparations before vowing to come out swinging for Anaheim one on the fifth of January.

Each rider has their own schedule, riders like Roczen and Tomac don’t tend to do any pre-season races in November and December while Jason Anderson will be heading back to Australia and Marvin Musquin will head home to France to race in front of his home fans at the Paris supercross. It’s horses for courses, with riders doing what they feel will get them best prepared for the 2019 supercross season.

Last season Musquin was in superb from in pre-season, but it was Anderson who ultimately prevailed in the championship, so it can often be hard to call just what pre-season results really indicate. But it does help build the excitement for the fans and encourage confidence and focus with the riders who do compete as they have a good gauge of where they stand and what they need to work on.

As the contenders pick their training schedules and race schedules it all adds to drama and the pre-season debate over who will become the 2019 supercross champion. And bizarrely, as it stands the defending champion Jason Anderson probably isn’t the favourite going in with the Eli Tomac many people’s pick for title, as seen in UK betting sites – if he can stay on the bike and Marvin Musquin, with David Vuillemin now on-board as riding coach, searching for the final piece of the puzzle to accomplish his dream of becoming supercross champion, and also one of the big pre-season favourites.
