Thailand GP: Who impressed in MX2?

Thailand hosted the second round of the MX2 World Championship, the heat and humidity made it an extremely tough GP for the riders. They will be happy that, probably, the toughest GP of the year is now out of the way. We will take a look at the riders that impressed during the course of the weekend.

Jeremy Seewer: The Thailand 2015 GP did not go well for Seewer as he ended up collapsing due to the humidity. However, a year later and Jeremy looked like a different rider as he adapted and coped to the hot weather a lot better this year. Jeremy didn’t have great starts this weekend but he rode well in both the moto’s to come through. He took a better start in the first moto coming from 5th to end up in 3rd.

However, in the second moto he was in seventh around the first corner which wasn’t great but managed to come back to 3rd again. The two 3rd positions gave him second overall and he is now second overall in the championship! A year ago with those starts I am not sure he would have been able to ride through to 3rd – the hard work with Everts looks to be paying off in 2016!

Aleksandr Tonkov: The Russian had a very good day on-board the Standing Construct Yamaha. In the first moto he caught Paturel for second and I expected them to battle it out for most the moto but credit to Tonkov, he had the speed to pull away. I feel like we still haven’t seen the best of the Russian in the MX2 class yet but this could be the season he shines!

In the second moto Aleksandr was running a good 3rd place and it looked like he would pass Jonass. However, he made a mistake and before he knew it he was back in 9th position. He put on a charge through the field and took a brilliant fourth position, the heat didn’t seem to faze him. A good third overall for the Yamaha rider and I expect to see him finish plenty more races on the podium in 2016!

Alvin Ostlund: Tonkov’s team mate, Alvin Ostlund was signed just a few weeks before Qatar to ride the season for Standing Construct after it emerged that Julien Lieber won’t be back for a while. Alvin probably isn’t the best prepared for the GP’s as he was preparing for the EMX250 championship that starts in Valkenswaard. However, Alvin had a good GP and he will only get better as the season progresses.

An 11th place finish in the first race was solid but he followed that up with an impressive 7th place finish in the second moto. Alvin hasn’t had a lot of time on the Standing Construct Yamaha so he is probably still trying to find the best settings and adjust to the bike – he has made good progress this weekend. Alvin is more of a sand rider so it was good seeing him perform on a technical hard pack track!

Vsevolod Brylyakov: Tonkov wasn’t the only Russian that impressed in Thailand! Vseva didn’t get a great start in the first moto as he was 13th after the first lap. He kept plugging away and ended up coming through the pack to finish a very good 7th.

The second moto didn’t go to plan as he suffered a crash and was way back in 22nd. He started to make good progress but then spokes from the front wheel broke on him which meant he couldn’t do the big jumps! He didn’t panic and dug deep to cross the line in 9th at the end of the moto. Vseva ended up sixth overall and the best Kawasaki rider in MX2 at Thailand!

A shout out to Max Anstie who came from 10th to 2nd in the second moto – that gives him something to build on heading back to Europe for Valkenswaard GP where he always has good speed!
