Talking point: Bouncing back

Tim Gajser, Pauls Jonass and Zach Osborne all demonstrated their determination and mental strength last weekend to win after poor results the week before.

Gajser of course got stuck in mud in Indonesia to finish seventh with Cairoli extending his points lead, but the defending champion said he worked very hard at home in the two week break.

“The season didn’t start in the best way but I have been working really hard and training back at home,” admitted Gajser. “I never stop working and its now paying off.” Paying off indeed, the defending champion came out all guns blazing in Argentina to win everything in sight and take over the points lead from Cairoli!

It was Gajser showing his best form of the season right when he needed it most and he has now taken the momentum in the championship, with Cairoli the man now having to fight back. Gajser has never been in the position of being defending champion before, but after getting beat by Cairoli all season, this was his chance of revenge and he took it with both hands.

He is showing he has the mental resilience to fight Cairoli tooth and nail for this title and Argentina was a huge boost and a very important time for the Slovenian who will have the red plate as they go into Mexico.

Pauls Jonass dominated round one in Qatar and he looked like he was on his way to another win in Indiensia only to get stuck in the infamous bog and suddenly Jonass was back in the points.

But in Argentina Jonass showed his class and new-found maturity. He could easily have ridden too aggressive with too much desire to right the wrongs of Indonesia but he didn’t, he battled his teammate in both motos but ultimately controlled both motos on his way to a double win.

“Indonesia was really disappointing for me because I had so much bad luck but here we made things right with a 1-1,” said Jonass. “I had a good feeling and great starts and was able to ride my own race without pushing too hard. I didn’t make any big mistakes and that was the goal.”

It was a very, very impressive performance given the context and although he still doesn’t lead the championship he is only three points behind rival Jeremy Seewer. But mentally this was a big moment for Jonass, he showed that he can cope with the pressure and deliver when he has too.

Zach Osborne is on a mission this year. Leading the supercross championship for the first time in his life, the former British champion and GP winner is taking no nonsense in 2017! Osborne finished fifth in Daytona after a crash as Adam Cianciarulo took the win to vault himself to within nine points of Osborne and breath even more confidence into the already extremely self-confident Cianciarulo.

His new confidence was evident when Osborne went up the inside of him on the first lap of practice, Cianciarulo felt he was now the man and nearly put Osborne down in the next corner, it was a signal of intent, “I’m back and I’m not going to be messed with.” But Osborne wasn’t taking that, he was the points leader and was determined to put Cianciarulo in place and immediately retaliated in the next turn, punting Cianciarulo aggressively off the track with an injured knee.

In the main Cianciarulo battled to fifth while Osborne bumped Cianciarulo’s teammate Savtagy out of the way to take a huge win to re-stablish his points lead and take back the momentum in the class. It was a big win and all day Osbornemade sure he was the man of the class.

“I just wanted to ride my own race, and that’s what I ended up doing.” said Osborne on his victory at Indy. “I felt like Savatgy was going to make some mistakes and I felt like there was an opportunity that I had to take. I knew I had to be there to assert myself and make the pass happen, and I did. I got my third win of the season and have a nine-point lead so I’m just going to keep plugging away.”

The Pro-circuit team won’t be happy but Osborne is showing that he means business and this title isn’t going to anyone else without a fight.
