Talking point: Best GP of the year

Andy McKinstry: For me, this is an easy one, it has to be the MXGP of Great Britain which was held at Matterley Basin. At times the racing at that track can be hit or miss but when it’s good, it’s really good. Remember Searle V Herlings back in 2012? Well, Cairoli V Herlings this year was probably even better – just a shame it didn’t involve a Brit in front of their home crowd.

Whilst you usually like to see the racing being close at the front with 3-4 riders battling for the lead. Matterley Basin was one of those races you just had to admire Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings as they had that wow factor.

Cairoli led twenty five laps over the weekend but still walked away with a 2-2, Herlings might have only led three laps all weekend but they were the most important laps. The Dutch rider done to Cairoli what the Italian has been doing to other riders so much of his career, the master of late race attacks and it worked for Herlings.

The real talking point was when the pair collided and it’s fair to say Cairoli didn’t like it but it got crowd going and everyone talking! The racing the pair put on at Matterley Basin was just superb and I’ll remember that one for a long time.

The racing in the MX2 class was good at Matterley Basin too between Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado.  The Latvian got the upper hand on the Spaniard that weekend going 1-1 but both moto’s went right to the last lap.

In the end Prado did win the title though so looking back he won’t mind about that!

Jonathan McCready: The three stand-out events for me were Argentina for the location, occasion, the fans and the racing, Assen for the stadium-feel as a Herlings won his first MGXP title in front of a rapturous huge home crowd and the British GP for the brilliant battle between Herlings and Cairoli.

But  I think Argentina might just edge it, a beautiful location, filled with passionate fans around a superb track that produced great racing that really set the tone for a great year.

It was also when Herlings immediately set his marker down by reeling Cairoli in race two  after a bad start and passing the defending world champ in a captivating final couple of laps with both riders giving it their all to establish themselves as the main man for the year.
