Stephen Mullally: Ready for the Ulster Championship!

Stephen Mullally: Ready for the Ulster Championship!

The first round of the Ulster Championship takes place at Desertmartin on Easter Monday and Stephen Mullally is ready for the start of the season.

The Irish rider will be competing in the MX2 class on a newly built 2018 125cc DMX Yamaha. Mullally competed two rounds of the series last year on the 125cc and it’s made him hungry for more racing on the two-stroke machine and this year he will do the full series on the 125cc against the four strokes.

In the past we’ve seen young guns in the form of Stuart Fee and Glenn McCormick be very competitive on the 125cc and with his experience, Mullally will hope to do the same.

At Seaforde last year, Mullally ended up fourth overall on the 125cc Yamaha and will hope for much of the same this year in a competitive class.

We caught up with Stephen Mullally before round one of the series gets underway on Monday.

On Seaforde last year on the 125cc..

Yes, we went to Seaforde with no expectations really other than to have fun and to see if the 2 stroke bike can still be competitive against the 4 strokes. In practice I think we qualified 5th so we were pretty surprised starting off the day and from then on the three races went well and came away with a 4th overall which we were more than happy about.

On your winter preparation..

Winter training has gone okay, I had started training a little late as I had just finished building a new house, and with the weather being so bad it was hard to get bike time in. As we all know it’s a long season and in another few weeks we should be where I need to be with fitness and speed.

Decision to do the full series this year on the 125cc..

After Seaforde, Nial (Darragh) and I were talking and we both decided we would race the next Ulster round at Tinkerhill and again we had a great days racing on the 125 and came away with a 3rd overall which we were more than happy about! So, that’s how it all started really, Nial asked me would I do the full Ulster MX2 series on the 125 in 2018 so it was an offer I couldn’t refuse! Nial and Leon at DMX Tuning have really put a lot of time and effort into building this years 125, so we’re really looking forward to getting started on it.

Expectations..

After getting good results in 2017, there’s no reason why we can’t be there or there about’s again come the end of 2018. I know this years bike is a lot more prepared so it’s more than capable of running up the front and with everything going to plan that’s where we’d like to end up.

Anyone you’d like to thank..

Nial Darragh and Leon Rogers at DMX Tuning for all their time and effort they’ve put into this year getting the bike ready and everything else for the Ulster MX2 Championship.
Also big thanks to Derek Traynor and Ciaran Hayes at Allmoto.ie/Megabikes Dublin, Danfay Yamaha Motor Ireland for supplying me with an MX1 bike for the Irish Championship in 2018.
