Simpson & Rizzi keep red plates after Lyng

The RFX KTM RACING powered by PAR HOMES team left Lyng on Sunday evening with a good haul of red plates, though the riders didn’t have it all their own way…

Kathryn Booth had been looking forward to this “one-off” club ladies support race. The would-be WMX contender was on top form at Lyng and came from a crash in the first race, to lead, only to be pipped on the final downhill by Amie Goodlad. Kathryn didn’t make any mistakes in race two with a convincing win in conclusive style to take top-spot on the podium.

Joel Rizzi continued his domination in the MXY2 class on his RFX KTM powered by PAR Homes 150 SX, taking pole in qualification and winning both races again. Joel took a comfortable win in race one but the gap was closed slightly in race two as Ike Carter brought the gap down at the flag to about three and a half seconds.

In the MX2 class, Charlie Putnam rode well but is still hampered by an injured wrist, missing out on points in both races by one place.

It was in the MX1 class where the fireworks were always going to ignite. The Shaun Simpson v Tommy Searle battle will race this year and in qualification Tommy threw down the gauntlet to snatch pole position on his final fast lap.

Searle headed the MX1 field to the now pre-historic concrete start gate which demands a quite unique start technique once the gate drops. Mel Pocock got it right on this occasion and lead Shaun into the first lap. Mel kept up the pace for three laps until Simpson barged his way through, with Searle coming though to face a similar race with Pocock for three more laps. With Searle into second, he began to close the gap on the number 24 but Shaun he was able to respond enough to maintain a gap to the flag.

Race two was a solid holeshot for Simpson, though Mel came into turn-one hard and clipped the rear wheel and side of the Scotsman almost taking out the high-speed following pack. With Shaun`s race shirt in tatters, his problems were just beginning as the 450 SX-F KTM was now jammed in 4th gear. Searle worked hard to get closer and closer to Simpson and the gap settled at around two seconds…

“I knew I had 25 minutes of racing and had to be careful with my clutch as I couldn’t change out of top gear. On the fast parts of the track, I was fine, but in the tight bends, where I would have been in second, it was tough” comments Shaun

On the last lap, Tommy was all over Shaun and managed to squeeze through though Simpson still took a solid (but frustrating) second place and was forced to settle on this occasion on the second step of the podium…

Nathan Dixon improved in the MX1 class as the day continued and the track roughened… After a slow start in quali and a race one DNF, Nathan got himself together and took a promising 13th in race two to give him a handful of points as he heads into the next round.

With 47 points each from Lyng, Simpson still holds the red plate and a slim, two point advantage over Searle heading to Canada Heights for round three in two-weeks` time.
