Race report: Ulster motocross championship final round

The final round of the 2017 Ulster motocross championship was a throwback to a bygone era with an old-fashioned scramble style circuit at Laurelbank.

A tight circuit that needs throttle control as well as some creative minds for passing produced some decent racing, especially in MX2.

Glenn McCormmick made a rare home appearance and the British championship rider took the overall win going 1-2-2 after a good battle all day with 450 Ulster champ Richard Bird, who rode both classes and went 1-2-2 in MX2.

But it was James Mackrel who took the Ulster MX2 title, the young KTM rider has been knocking on the door for a couple of years but finally took the title he has been chasing, despite having his appendix out during the season!

Mackrel said: “I’m happy that I finally got a championship to my name after a tough 12 years, I mostly lost them to injures but that is how it goes. I had a tough year with a lot of bike issues and my appendix having to be taken out, so I’m surprised I finished where I did.. I would just like to thank Jason Mccotter for all the help this season who stuck by me on my bad days as well as good days, Atomized art NI, and my mum and dad.”

In Grade B it was Cailum Meara who dominated the season to win the title while in Grade C it was Jonny Presho who won the overall and a well deserved CMX2 championship after an impressive season.

MX2 results:

Richard Bird continued his domination of the MX1 class to win all three motos on a track that suits his barley stubble heritage. Sean Devlin was second overall and has had a good season on the Risk Racing Honda with Ryan Adair in third.

Josh McCorkell had a good season to win the Grade B MX1 title.
