Race report: Paris supercross night one

What an exciting night of action in Paris!

Justin Hill took the superpole win on a fast, hard pack track and then led race one after a mistake by early race leader Jeremy Martin. It appeared all was going well on his debut race for Smartop Honda but Hill then came under big pressure from Dylan Ferrandis and when the pass attempt came it put Hill on the deck!

Ferrandis dived to the inside on a wide berm but ended up going into the side of Hill leaving the Honda rider nowhere to go but over the berm. Ferrandis took the win and, credit to Ferrandis, he went straight over to Hill to apologise for the move.

Hill said after the incident after seeing the video: “He said he didn’t mean to do it. The turns are very wide, it’s the nature of the track tonight.”

Race two was another great race. Ferrandis went down in the first turn and had to come through the field to ultimately get fifth in a great ride. It wasn’t easy as Chad Reed pushed Ferrandis into the bales battling for sixth but Ferrandis returned the favours a turn later as he charged back to the top five!

At the front it was all going on with Jeremy Martin leading again until an aggressive Justin Barcia took the lead with Malcolm Stewart following right in his wheel-tracks. Amazingly, Stewart went right around the outside of Barcia on a berm to take the lead only for Stewart to get caught up with a fallen rider on the last lap and lose the lead back to Barcia!

Stewart wasn’t done and went after Barcia again passing the Yamaha man with two turns to go before the checkered flag to take a very popular win!

Race three and things got worse for Ferrandis after yet another first turn crash after getting collected by Malcolm Stewart leaving the two fastest guys on the track on the deck in turn one! Ferrandis was forced to pit to get his front forks straightened but carnage wasn’t over as Jeremy Martin hit the deck and then Chad Reed went down!

Up front Vince Friese was holding off Justin Barcia – but not for long! Barcia made the move and would win unchallenged and take the overall win on the night. Joey Savatgy got the better of Justin Hill for second in the battle of new riders on new teams, Hill couldn’t quite stop the JGR Suzuki he used to ride move around him, in what was Savatgy’s best ride of the night.

In SX2 Thomas Do won the opening two motos but it was Brian Hsu who ran away win the third moto to win again after a long two years of injury that knocked him out of the MX2 GP scene. Do won the overall on the night from Hsu, who will be hoping to show that form in GPs next season, with American Jace Owen third.

SX1 Overall (after day one)
