Race report: MXGP Argentina – Cairoli and Prado do the double!

Tony Cairoli took two superb starts from the outside to put him in the top five out of the gate in both motos and he pushed hard to get to the front early in a fantastic performance at the opening MXGP of the year in Argentina.

Cairoli attacked immediately in race one to take the lead quickly on lap and controlled the race from Gajser and Febvre.

In race two Cairoli passed Gajser for second and then Febvre for the lead inntwo corners before keeping Gajser behind him for the rest of the race even if the Honda man kept the gap within three to four seconds.

“I knew I had some seconds I could drop, the riding was good and not so much mistakes, I am really happy,” said a very happy Cairoli who immediately stamped his authority on the series.

It gave Gajser two second places for second overall and a very good start to his season.

But it was bad luck for Romain Febvre who was race one and was in comfortable third again in race two when he got high-sided in the wave section and went down hard. Febvre was carried off the track clutching his ankle and appeared in a lot of pain.

That left the door open for Jeremy Van Horebeek to take an amazing podium on a privateer Honda, after only getting the deal to even race MXGP a couple of weeks ago. Van Horebeek was brilliant all weekend and deserved his third place trophy.

“I’m speechless actually, until two weeks ago I didn’t know I would be riding GPs, I’m so happy,” smiled Van Horebeek,

Gautier Paulin was fourth overall after a fifth in race one he stormed through the field after crashing with Desalle in turn one of race two to get back to fifth in a brilliant ride – this was the real Gautier Paulin on show!

Clement Desalle battled also came through well to seventh, while Max Anstie recovered from a DNF in race one to take fourth after a big battle with Searle.

Searle though took seventh overall in very good ride over both motos, and only just missed out on a top five with Paulin and Desalle getting him in the last two laps.

Shaun Simpson rode strong as well for eighth overall on the RFX KTM powered by PAR homes.

Jorge Prado got his title defence off to the perfect start in MX2 with a calm 1-1 win in Argentina. The fan favourite started just behind teammate Vialle in race one but quickly moved into the lead to control the race and holeshot race two and slowly pulled away to take a classy double race win,

“It was great coming here and getting on top of the box, super happy and hopefully we can continue this all season,” said Prado.

Thomas Kjer Olsen fought hard after starting just in the top tenninnrace one and top five into ace two, but by the time he got into second Prado already had a gap Olsen wasn’t going to close. Olsen admitted he wanted the win but was still happy with a strong start to the year

Mitchell Evans was superb all weekend and fully deserved the podium at us first ever GP. Evans was sixth in race on but got away behind leader Prado in race two and tried to hang with the word champ before Olsen eventually got the Aussie and he was ecstatic to make the box at his first try, saying: “it’s an unreal feeling, my first ever GP, I’m speechless really, my first winter pre-season there were some tough days, I couldn’t be any happier.”

Calvin Vlaanderen was strong in both motos and just missed the podium on a tie-break with Evans with Henri Jacobi fifth overall, a bad start in race two killing what probably should have been a podium performance if you looked at his speed.

Ben Watson had a tough day with a poor start in race two netting him sixth at the flag then a mistake while third in race one and seemingly losing his rhythm to end up ninth in race two – not what the Brit was looking for at round one.
