Race report: BYN round one

Race report: BYN round one

They say the Lake District is ‘Gods Country’ and going by the action at Haverigg Moto Parc for round 1 of the Thor British Youth Nationals – we certainly agree.

Gareth Hockey RHL Activities: “I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the championship, the weather was pretty much perfect, the guys at Cumbria Motocross Club worked their socks off with the track bearing in mind the track was underwater just 2 weeks ago and the racing in all classes was superb. Its always good to get the first round out of the way, not just for my team but for all the riders and parents, we can now look forward to an exciting season ahead with the 4 remaining rounds – well done everyone.”

Maximum man Alex Brown was on fire in the 125 two stroke class, taking the checkers in all 6 races, chasing hard behind was Oliver Benton in second who tried his best to catch the flying Brown but just couldn’t squeeze enough fire power out of his KTM. Dee-Jay Walker topped the podium in third.

In the Junior class it was good to see so many new faces on the start line, sand is always daunting for the youngest class of the championship but every single rider rode their hearts out in all 6 tough races. Charlie Heyman was the man to beat with 5 out of 6 race wins, Vinnie Guthrie took race 1 but just missed out on a podium finish in fourth. Charlie Palmer and Alfie Jones both rode magnificently to complete the podium line up. Bradd-Lee Timmis and Raife Broadley rounded off the top 6.

The BW85 class produced 4 different race winners, Dylan Woodcock, Daniel Bewley, Jed Etchells and Sam Price but it was Team Green’s Dylan Woodcock who took the honours this time around in what is set to be yet another year of bar banging action in the remaining 4 rounds of the BYN.
Callum Mitchell and Harry Kimber both rode consistently well to finish on the podium – expect these 2 riders to win races sometime in 2015. Finishing off the top 6 were Tom Grimshaw, Ben Clark and Sam Price – round 2 is going to be amazing.

Exact same happened in the SW85 class, 6 amazing races with 3 different race winners, Lewis Hall, Kacey Hird and Joel Rizzi and like their big wheeled counterparts it was another Team Green rider who topped the podium with 4 race wins. The racing was so close in the deep sand of Haverigg, we could have had a different winner in every moto. Kacey Hird and Sam Nunn did enough to finish on the podium ahead of Eddie Wade in fourth, Lewis Wood in fifth and Joel Rizzi in sixth.

In the B Group combined 85cc race it was Jack Abbott who raced to the checkers first ahead of Kelton Gwyther and Billy Collins.

Consistency won the day in the competitive British Open class with Jordan Eccles coming out on top in 6 exciting races and 2 races wins, Jay Lamb will walk away knowing he has the speed to challenge Jordan after winning 4 of the 6 races – expect fireworks at Cusses Gorse for round 2. Luke Smith finished runner up with 6 consistent point scoring rides, Jay was third, Robbie Dowson, George Grigg-Pettitt and Jay Hague all finished in the top 6 to round off an amazing weekend of racing at Haverigg Moto Parc.
