Race reflections: Redsand MXGP

A new track greeted the riders for round three of the championship and it was certainly a modern one. It was a spectacular circuit but perhaps a few too many jumps in places  meant the track didn’t get too rough, in fact Pauls Jonass urged Youthstream to not smooth the track out overnight after the Saturday and again on Sunday felt it should have been allowed to get rougher.

However in contrast, his teammate Jorge Prado thought the track was great – and it just shows you that track designers will never please everyone. The younger riders seem to really enjoy these more supercross inspired new school circuits, that’s the things bout MXGP series these days, there are tracks to suit everyone’s varying preferences in the schedule.

One of the most notable observations was the mentality of Tony Cairoli all weekend, the only rider he cared about was Jeffrey Herlings. Herlings was being videoed during practice so Tony could compare and contrast his style and technicqus in sections against the Dutchman between sessions, and even in the races, Cairoli kept looking back to see where Herlings was, once Tony felt he was making too much progress through the field, Cairoli would up the pace and pass a rider himself to keep the gap to Herlings.

It was further proof that as of now this is a two-rider shootout for the MXGP championship and shows the level of confidence Cairoli has that the only competiter he is worried about is his teammate.

in the press conference both riders stated they were seeking parts to help with their bike set-up for the coming races, both still seeking improvements to beat the other in what is a fascinating duel already.

He didn’t qualify for the EMX250 races but 14 year-old Jeff Lawrence really stood out with this riding technique and poise on the bike. The little brother of Hunter really has a lot of talent and should be well suited to the US supercross style. He was in the battle of the transfer places in the LCQ but a crash prevented Lawrence from potentially quailifying at his first attempt.

This kid can control a bike and had no problem whipping the 250 Suzuki around when he needed it and his corner speed isn’t bad either despite his diminutive stature. Jett could turn out to be a very special rider if he can stay away from injury, Geico Honda might just have a future star on their hands!

A word too on Pauls Jonass, the Latvian is just so solid and it looks like he is immune to pressure, he event admitted he could go faster if needs to and watching Harry Everts support his with so much passion and intensity is great to see. Harry has seen and done it all, but clearly still loves this sport and gets a lot of satisfaction out of seeing Jonass ride like this, but you can tell he still doesn’t take any nonsense – he’s intense with that stopwatch!

Greg Smets is proving to be a revelation in EMX300 this year but even more entertaining was see his dad Joel, nervous as a kitten, and biting his nails throughout the race, especially when Brad Anderson put the pressure on! After all that nervous energy Joel was straight back to his role with KTM advising he riders for MX2 and MXGP – it was a busy day for the former five time world champion!
