Quick thoughts: MXGP of Russia

  • Tough and technical track: There’s been quite a lot of hard pack tracks on the MXGP calendar this year but nothing quite like Russia which was like riding concrete. There’s been a lot of debate about the track after the weekend but personally I thought it was great – riding those type of tracks is what makes MXGP riders the best in the world. Perhaps the one error Youthstream made was to flatten the track overnight as that made the track faster than it would have been if they didn’t groom it.
  • Kawasaki injuries: It was a horrible weekend for Kawasaki as Alessandro Lupino, Evgeny Bobryshev and Clement Desalle all suffered injuries which will see them ruled out for possibly the rest of the season.
  • Great racing: Whether it was MX2 trio – Jorge Prado, Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jago Geerts battling or MXGP’s Tim Gajser and Arnaud Tonus the racing was superb in Russia.
  • Great Gajser: Tim Gajser is really on a roll at the moment. After going 1-1 in Russia that’s now six moto’s he’s went undefeated. Gajser’s red Honda will now have the red plate as he’s took over the championship lead by 13 points heading into Latvia.
  • EMX2T entries: There was only eleven entries in the EMX2T class in Russia. Whilst the series is good for the nearby races it’s not a good idea to send the class to Russia.
  • EMX250 hots up: Stephen Rubini took advantage of Alberto Forato’s bad starts in Russia to grab the red plate heading into round five. Van De Moosdijk is just 21 points down too as it’s starting to look like a three horse race for the title.
