Quick thoughts: MXGP of Portugal

Quick thoughts: MXGP of Portugal

  • Gajser has raised his level in 2019. There’s no doubt that after a few tough season’s, Tim Gajser is back to the level that’s saw him win two world title’s. After winning in Portugal, he will be hoping to do the same in France this weekend at another track which should suit him.
  • Can anyone stop Prado? Even though Prado went 1-1 yet again, you feel the guys behind are closing the gap at the front. When and who is going to stop Prado? It might take a bad start from the Spaniard in order to make it happen but the likes of Olsen, Jacobi, Evans and Geerts are all capable of a surprise.
  • Desalle shows flashes of brilliance. After Trentino, Desalle had to go under the knife but already looked like his old self in Portugal. He led the first seven laps in the second moto but hasn’t got the intensity at the moment after his injury. He should only continue to get stronger though!
  • The debutant: Alexander Brown made his MX2 World Championship after getting the call to fill in for the injured Conrad Mewse at
Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee. Brown battled hard and improved every time he went to the track and even picked up a point in race two – congratulations!
  • New guys at the front. It’s been a while since the likes of Arnaud Tonus, Jeremy Seewer and Brent van Doninck have been right at the sharp end but they all had solid weekends in Portugal which was good to see.
  • Over-watered track for MX2? Before both the MX2 moto’s the track was very heavily watered and perhaps a bit too much. It’s been a while since it’s been the case and it saw the likes of Iker Larranaga and Michele Cervellin get cross rotted. However, the track developed nicely and was good for both MXGP races.
  • Kras on a roll. Mike Kras has now won three out of the last four moto’s – he’s looking like he’s going to be really hard to beat in the EMX2T class but due to a DNF to his name only leads the series by one point from Brad Anderson.
  • Could this be Country Duncan’s year? Coming from Australia Courtney Duncan is still in search for her first WMX title. If Portugal was anything to go by then this year really should be the year she lifts the title, she completely dominated.
