Quick thoughts: MXGP of Lombardia – Mantova

Quick thoughts: MXGP of Lombardia – Mantova

  • Two very different race tracks:  Mantova is usually a sand track but this year on Saturday it was pretty much a hard pack track in what offered a hard and challenging track to the riders. With overnight rain the track then became a lot more sandy and a mud race. Both days offered a very different race track in Mantova but both days were challenging for the riders.
  • All on the start: If there was one race you didn’t want a bad start then it was at Mantova. The rain made the track one lined which meant coming through the pack was extremely difficult.
  • Surprise podiums: Davy Pootjes (third overall in MX2) and Pauls Jonass (MXGP rookie – second overall) both got on the box in Mantova which is somewhat of a surprise. That will do their confidence the world of good heading into round six.
  • KTM kings: Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado look hard to beat at the moment. Even though Gajser beat Cairoli in Trentino the 9 times world champion always finds away to claw those points back. As for Prado, he’s currently won every moto he’s raced – who’s going to stop him?
  • Crash Victim: It was a weekend to forget for Tim Gajser as he must have had seven or eight crashes over both moto’s. He still quite remarkably finished tenth in the first moto and sixth in moto two. The Slovenian is now 40 points behind Cairoli in the chase for the championship.
  • Aussie’s love the mud! Last year we saw some great rides from Hunter Lawrence in the mud. At Mantova Mitch Evans showed he can ride in the mud too as he finished third overall and Jed Beaton was on for a podium before taking a big crash.
  • Through the wars: A lot of riders aren’t riding at 100% fitness. Since the last GP Belgian riders Jeremy Van Horebeek and Clement Desalle both underwent surgeries which meant they weren’t 100% fit for Mantova. They will be hoping to be back to their best as soon as possible.
  • Not much luck for Standing Construct KTM. Both Max Anstie and Ivo Monticelli were both running in the top five in moto two before a crash and bike problems ruined their races. The Standing Construct team will be hoping for better luck next week. Another rider who didn’t have much luck was Henry Jacobi who had a mechanical on the last lap of the second moto – all that hard work for nothing!
