Quick thoughts: MXGP of Latvia – Drama!

  • Drama: Where do you even start when it comes to the racing in Latvia? Between Gajser’s high speed qualifying crash, Herlings sighting lap crash then winning with a broken ankle, Cairoli’s crash – crazy GP! If you haven’t watched it yet it’s something you need to do.
  • Three riders – forty points: Latvia really had plenty of drama but at the end of the weekend three riders in MXGP (Gajser, Febvre, Tonus) all had the same amount of points to tie for the win. Due to winning the second moto Gajser came out on top but it really was amazing how close it all was! Febvre even thought he’d won the GP after a last lap pass moved him into second.
  • Another MXGP podium without a KTM: Before round five in France, the last MXGP podium without a KTM was back in 2017 in Sweden, we’ve now had three in a row! With Herlings out and Cairoli a doubt for Germany the streak could continue too – bad times for KTM who aren’t used to this.
  • Track crew: The track on Saturday in Latvia was rough but then the track crew groomed the track overnight and any opportunity they had on Sunday. The track didn’t get a chance to develop as it normally would and the track was rougher on Saturday! As they groomed the track it also left it quite high speed. It would be nice if Youthstream left the tracks and let them develop and slow down as they used too!
  • Warrior award: Pauls Jonass was in the wars at his home GP. He took a crash in the first moto and needed stitches on his eyelid of all places – ouch! He battled through the pain though to end up 17-6 for twelfth overall.
  • EMX250 hotting up: After Latvia, seven points separate the top three riders – Alberto Forato, Stephen Rubini and Roan Van de Moosdijk. There’s plenty twists and turns left in this series yet but who’s going to cope most with the pressure? That could decided the title.
  • Kras V Anderson: Mike Kras got the red plate back in the EMX2T series in Latvia but only has two points over Brad Anderson. It’s all to play for with two rounds of the series left.
