Quick thoughts: MXGP of France

Quick thoughts: MXGP of France

  • The atmosphere: The French are so passionate about Motocross and it’s clear to see! The atmosphere looked unbelievable and I’m sure the French riders loved every single second of it as they got lots of support around the track.
  • The racing: The racing at Saint Jean d’Angely was just top notch. Whether it was EMX250 with an entertaining second race battle for the lead. Geerts V Prado in MX2 or the carnage of the second MXGP moto it was a very memorable GP for the right reasons.
  • Gate drop problems: MXGP is very professional and we don’t usually see these type of issues at the World Championship. However, just like in Mantova there were gate drop issues which meant they weren’t all falling at the same speed for all the riders. Hopefully this will be worked on and we won’t see it happen in MXGP again.
  • Pain, what pain? Stephen Rubini was in a cast just a week ago but got clearance to ride just a few days before his home GP. You wouldn’t have thought it with his performance but he was riding in pain and still won the EMX250 overall. Romain Febvre is still riding in some pain and discomfort too but ended up third overall in MXGP – thank goodness for adrenaline!
  • The championship chase is ON: Tim Gajser has narrowed the points gap down to Antonio Cairoli to just 10 points – the championship battle is back on folks.
  • An MXGP podium without a KTM: The last time that happened was back in 2017 at Sweden!
  • Under rated? What a show Jago Geerts put on in the first moto as he caught and passed Prado – the first rider to do that this year! It was looking like he’d do the same in the second moto before he crashed but an amazing performance from Geerts nonetheless. Considering how talented and fast he is, there’s not that much of a buzz around him – one of the most under rated riders in the world?
  • Problems for Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee: Fill in rider, Alexander Brown scored his first championship point for the team on his GP debut in Portugal. Unfortunately, France didn’t go to plan as he picked up a shoulder injury in free practice which ruled him out for the rest of the weekend. Hopefully he’s back as soon as possible!
