Quick thoughts: MXGP of China

Success at the first attempt: It was all a bit unknown as the GP circus headed to Shanghai for the first MXGP in China, but the track and the racing proved to be very successful. A mix of sandy and hard pack provided a good challenge for the riders and, by the last couple of motos, the track got nice and rough and required full concentration. Even the entries were decent despite 10 riders injured in the premier class.

If they can keep coming back it could grow the sport a lot in a huge market and provide a great exposure for MXGP and the profile of motocross.

Winning on a bad day: You know you are a generational talent when you don’t have your best day at a GP and you still end up on top! Jorge Prado mentioned he couldn’t find his flow on Sunday but despite the pressure from Vlaanderen in race one and determined teammate Vialle in race two he managed to take both moto wins.

It was a similar story with Jeffrey Herlings who, while still not fully fit, is still fast enough to be up there and determined enough to do what it takes to win – even against his MXON teammate Glenn Coldenhoff. It just highlights the supreme talent and mentality both have and why they are two great champions.

Privateer team success: With all the factory involvement in MXGP it’s still cool to see the privateer teams being competitive. Glenn Coldenhoff has been on fire in the last month and took third overall in the world championship on his Standing Construct KTM and won another moto in China for second overall on the day while Jeremy Van Horebeek rode fantastic in China to take fifth overall on his Honda giving two private efforts in the top five on the day.

With the bikes so good now a small but expert team are showing they can provide the tools to get the job done for riders that aren’t on a full factory effort and that helps add motivation to the riders and competitiveness on the track. If you are good enough you can still be front runner!

If Youthstream and manufacturers can help out these smaller teams more to fund their overseas GP travel costs it will only enhance the chances of their success and the depth of the world championship overseas with more capable riders getting to every round.
