Pauls Jonass – an underrated World Champion

Pauls Jonass couldn’t have got his season underway any better by winning the first six moto’s of the season which meant he was unbeaten. But since then Jorge Prado has raised his game and came into Matterley Basin the more in-form rider out of the pair.

During the qualifying race it looked like Jorge Prado would be hard to stop on race day at Matterley Basin but Pauls Jonass had all the answers for the Spanish sensation just like you’d expect a world champion to have.

The Latvian world champion didn’t ride the Motocross Des Nations last year at the Matterley Basin circuit due to bad concussion he picked up earlier in the season. The circuit has changed quite a bit since the last time he’d have rode it but after a not so good qualifying, Jonass upped his game on race day when it mattered the most.

The modest Latvian was a spectator at Motocross Des Nations last year and you could tell by standing beside him in pit-lane that he was he was really impressed with Zach Osborne’s qualifying performance at the event.

But at the GP which took place at the weekend Pauls Jonass proved he’s got all the tools needed. Not only is he good under intense pressure but he has the speed to beat anybody on their day – except maybe Tony Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings.

Not only did Jonass go 1-1 in Matterley Basin but he also passed Prado in both the races to do it. In the first moto he made the move on the first lap and held off the young Spaniard to win by less than a second to show how good he is under pressure.

The second moto was a completely different type of win as Prado took the holeshot and led for eight laps but then Jonass made his move to pass the young Spaniard who pushed hard in the last few laps to pass the Latvian but couldn’t respond.

Jonass proved at the weekend that he has still has the raw speed required when he needs it and now has a twenty-eight points gap at the top of the championship standings.

There’s still a lot of racing to go as we are only hitting the half way point in the series this weekend in France but if Pauls Jonass wins the title this year he’ll move up to the MXGP World Championship with two world titles in the bag. Jonass might not have the talent Ken Roczen, Jeffrey Herlings or even Jorge Prado are blessed with but he’s certainly getting the most out of his career.

Don’t underestimate the Latvian as he has all the attributes needed to win world titles and he’s showed that with hard work anything is possible.
