MX1 Ulster champ Richard Bird on going to Red Bud for team Ireland!

Richard Bird had a hectic but enjoyable day on Saturday at Tinker Hill in the final round of the Ulster championship.

Not only did he ride three races in the MX1 class that saw him deservedly wrap the big bike title up but he also dropped down to the 250 class to get a couple of extra motos in to help with intensity and fitness for the MXoN at Red Bud.

“It’s been a busy day, I went out in the MX2 for fitness more than anything but I got a puncture in that second race and it was tight between Glenn and Jason so I wanted to watch the race to see what would happen,” admitted Bird.

“But I have been enjoying riding my bike, the 450, and I was glad to wrap the championship up.”

It meant another brilliant season and the third title of the year after he wrapped up the Irish MX1 and also the British Expert MX1 at the MX Nationals.

Bird flying high

Bird will now turn his focus to the MXoN where he will ride on the open class and he was straight back on the bike on Sunday get more laps in before the huge event.

Always known for his hard work and professionalism, it is a great reward for Bird who had been putting in the hours on and off the bike for a good 15 years at adult level nevermind the schoolboys years before that!

This will be his second time on the team after he rode back in France in 2011, but to race in the USA at Red Bud makes the opportunity extra special.

“It’s unreal,” offered Bird on the call to race at such a legendary track and event. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to go out there, Graeme and Martin are riding brilliant and I’m looking forward to going out there and getting going!”

But will he be going for Larocco’s leap? “I’ll have to do it” he laughed, before getting on the bike for his fifth race of the day and yet another win!
