MX1 preview Desertmartin British championship

Jake Nicholls leads a deep field of talent that will take to the track on Sunday in the MX1 class at Desertmartin for round four of the British championship.

Nicholls is leading the series on the Buildbase Honda and looks to be in some of the best form of his career, he looks very comfortable on the red machine and seems happy not to be going around the world racing MXGP, the speed is there and Jake is the man to beat for the 2018 British championship right now.

But the rest are chasing hard, Evgeny Bobryshev had a difficult start to the season after losing his GP ride last year, but he has got his motocross feet under him again quickly, his GP speed is back to a top ten level and he is right there in contention for the British title in second place, he has raced at Desertmartin before so there will be no surprises for him this weekend.

Graeme Irwin is the man every fan will be going to to see at Desertmartin in MX1. The reigning champ will have the big number one on his back just like Gordon Crockard did back in 2001. Irwin will be hoping for a win just like Crockard got back then to get himself closer to Nicholls after his burns at Blaxhall restricted his scoring, but the points are proving valuable as he still sits third in the title chase 33 behind Nicholls.

Elliott Banks-Browne is fourth overall 35 points behind Nicholls, Banks-Browne hasn’t ridden any GPs, but he shows the speed in Britain to run with the GP regulars and can win on his day, so can’t be counted out at Desertmartin.

Tommy Searle is not in the championship hunt after missing the early rounds through injury but he back on form in GPs and has shown top ten speed, he goes well at a Desertmartin and the former GP winner will be looking for his first win of the year.

Ivo Monticelli has had some breakthrough GP rides recently on the JK Yamaha including a top ten with help from Christophe Pourcel so don’t be surprised to see him to be closer to the front this weekend than he has so far in the British championship season.

Brad Anderson is always there or thereabouts at Desertmartin and Ryan Houghton has a good turn of speed in the sand as does Gert Krestinov.

Erki Kahro has been getting faster as the season has gone on, even scoring a coupe of points at the GP in Ottobiano in the sand, so he should be comfortably at Desertmartin.

On the local front Richard Bird leads the charge and the Reigning Irish champ, who was a spectator last year, has proven before he can get into points and will be expecting to do so again with his speed, fitness and consistency never in doubt.

Luke Smith will make the switch to a 450 this weekend and the big machine should suit his smooth style.
