The MX Nationals fastest 40 is possibly the closest thing, for those of us old enough to remember, to the original British Top 35. An Open championship where riders of all capacities could race together. Back in the day it was largely dominated by the 500cc riders like Dave Thorpe and Kurt Nicol, but occasionally riders on 250cc 2-strokes like Rob Herring would take a win. No different to today really, although no 250 has taken an MX Nationals fastest 40 win yet. It’s more a case of when it will happen rather than if as a few have already come close, very close.
As a former rider who made that leap into the top 35 in 1989, it was very much the class to be in. The only way to gain entry to the class was to qualify via the hard fought support classes, which ensured that the Top 35 really was the best of the best in the UK. This is the blueprint for the fastest 40.
The MXN Fastest 40 is open to the top 20 riders from the British Championship MX1 and MX2 classes plus the top 3 Youth riders moving up to the Pro ranks. The racing at the first 2 rounds has been unreal, it’s sometimes hard to know where to watch with so many strong battles going on throughout such a deep field of the UKs fastest riders. The two 30 minute plus 2 lap races really test these riders fitness to the limit which is also great preparation for those destined for GP’s. It always amazes me how in the last 5 minutes the race changes and new battles to the flag take place. To keep things up to date MX1 & MX2 are scored separately with a podium for each on the day.
As part of the MX Nationals Championship we also run the ACU British Expert Championship, probably the closest thing to the original British Support class and a great stepping stone for riders wanting to compete at the top of British Motocross. In its first official year as an ACU recognised British title it really is proving competitive. At the last round at Lyng, the Expert MX2 class saw a different winner in each of the 4 races. Both MX1 and MX2 Expert titles are very close in points with only 2 rounds gone.
If you want to see the UK’s top riders going head to head then your next chance is Hawkstone Park near Shrewsbury on 10th/11th June. We also will have the Open 85cc, MXY1 and MXY2 combined and the Elite Clubmen championships, so plenty of racing. In fact 14 races on Saturday and 16 on Sunday for just £15 for a weekend pass!
