Musquin injury update – knee
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – After claiming the Moto 1 victory at the 2019 AMA Pro Motocross finale on Saturday, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin experienced a tough break in the second moto with a race-ending crash in the second turn.
Coming into the final round, Musquin sat in second overall in the 450MX Championship and he got himself off to a great start in Moto 1. With a good jump off the start, Musquin settled into fourth on the opening lap. He powered his way into third on lap four before putting on a big charge to catch the lead battle about halfway into the race. While running at the tail end of a three-bike freight-train, Musquin inserted his front tire into the lead battle late in the race and from there it was a head-to-head battle for the lead spot. Musquin overtook second with three laps to go and navigating through heavy lapped traffic, he passed for the lead as the two-lap card came out, holding strong to claim the Moto 1 victory.
In Moto 2, Musquin had another great jump off the line as he battled for a top position through the first turn. However, he came into the second turn with high speeds and wasn’t able to slow down in time to make the left-handed corner and he came into contact with another rider, sending Musquin tumbling through the turn. As a result, Musquin tweaked his knee and was transported off the track by the medic crew where he was forced to sit on the sideline for the final moto of the season.
With a combined score of 1-40, Musquin ultimately finished ninth overall at the finale and third overall in the 450MX Championship Standings.
Musquin: “In the first moto, I charged hard to get around [Eli] Tomac and the lap after I passed [Ken] Roczen and it was just awesome. To me, it was the best moto of the year. In the second moto, I was maybe charging too hard off the start and I came into that left-hander too hot and couldn’t slow down enough. Zach [Osborne] was ahead of me and I couldn’t avoid him and I basically landed on him in that little turn and I couldn’t avoid that. Unfortunately, I crashed and tweaked my knee so I couldn’t keep going. It was a bummer, I wanted to finish on a high note and also secure my second place in the championship, but unfortunately, I lost that. Right now, there’s nothing we can do for it but we’ve got some time off.”
Musquin’s teammate, Cooper Webb, did not line up at Round 12 as he continues to recover from a left knee bone contusion that he sustained during a crash in Moto 1 of the Unadilla National.
