Musquin: Expected a little better at Washougal

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin battled to his eighth podium finish of the season on Saturday with third overall at Washougal for Round 9 of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship. With 2-3 finishes on the day, Musquin’s consistency continues to keep his championship hopes alive as he sits just 15 points shy of the 450MX Championship lead with three rounds remaining in the series.

Musquin, who qualified third overall earlier in the day, put his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION into fourth-place off the start in Moto 1. He powered his way into second by lap four and he kept pace with the leader early on. Musquin eventually dropped back from the lead battle and rode his own race to the checkers, finishing on the second step of the podium in race one.

In Moto 2, he got off to a top-five start and charged his way into third by lap two. He quickly made moves into the second-place position on lap four as he began his quest to the front. Chipping away at the leader’s gap, Musquin brought himself to within striking distance of Ken Roczen out front, but a hard-charging Eli Tomac entered the battle later in the race. With five laps to go, Musquin was passed for second and he fought hard in the final laps to ultimately finish third in the race.

Musquin: “Honestly, I expected a little better weekend. I love Washougal but it was definitely a tough track and it was hot out there so it was hard for the guys to keep the moisture and the softness in the ground, as expected. My starts were decent, not great, and I was able to put myself in okay position both motos and fight hard for the lead, but I came up short in both motos with second and third.”

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC – WPS – KTM’s Blake Baggett earned another top-five overall in the 450MX class with 6-5 moto finishes. His teammate, Benny Bloss, notched seventh overall with a pair of top-ten moto finishes (7-10) for the day.

With an impressive Moto 2 race-win, Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM’s Shane McElrath claimed second overall with combined moto scores of 9-1 for the day. His teammate, Jordon Smith, rode to a podium finish in Moto 1, where he went on to claim eighth overall with 3-13 finishes. Alex Martin, who finished sixth overall at Washougal, maintains second overall in the 250MX Championship with three rounds remaining.
