Martin Barr interview – I knew I just had to keep my head down and keep charging!

Martin Barr was the man to beat all weekend long in EMX250. The Revo Husqvarna man took pole by half a second but the unlucky Irishman got caught up in a start straight crash in race one after he got sideswiped by an over enthusiastic Yamaha!

It restricted Barr to tenth place in that moto, but after a medicorce start in race two Barr showed what he could do pulling through the field to take a well-earned first EMX250 moto win of his career. His 10-1 scores meant he missed the podium by a point, ironically thanks to a last lap pass for ninth by race one winner, teammate Mel Pocock, in race two but ovearall it was a great weekend for Barr, Pocock and the while Revo Husqvarna squad whose investment in the championship is already paying dividends with two moto wins.

We caught up with Barr after his second moto win to get his thoughts on his weekend in Spain.

I guess we should start with yesterday, you went fastest then two foot out of the gate you ended up going down because of someone else!

Yeah, it was one of them days, I was on such a high after qualifying, I had a really good winter, my Revo Husqvarna has been brilliant whatever I have wanted to do I have went and done it, it’s been awesome.

Coming in I knew my speed was good in the pre-season races but until you actually get here you never really know, some 15 year-old kid could come out that you’ve never heard of and be on it and there is a few of them out there. Qualifying isn’t usually my strong point and actually the lap I went pole didn’t feel that it good it actually flt pretty slow but I obviously hit everything perfect.

So that set me up good for the races. Race one I didn’t get very far I got about 20 ft and some guy on a Yamaha came across me and another guy and I ended up going over the bars. I basically came from dead last although there was a lot of people down in the first turn as well. The first few laps it was mayhem there was bikes and people going everywhere! I knew I just had to keep my head down and keep charging, it is a long season and every point counts. With my fitness being so good I was able to pick them off right to the end, although we had a slight problem with the rear wheel, I just nursed it home and ended up tenth. So yeah it was disappointing but it was a strong ride.

Coming into today I was really looking forward to it, I knew I had the speed and if I got a decent start wouldn’t be far away. I got a decent enough start although I got caught up with somebody in the second turn but got the head down. I could see the leader was pulling away a little bit, but I knew once I got into second place and got a clear track I could run my own lines I could hunt him down. I did that and was taking a couple of seconds a lap out of him. I got into the lead with about two to go and just used my head and brought it home for my first European win. I was fourth overall I think mel got somebody on the last lap. If I didn’t have that problem with the rear wheel yesterday I could have maybe got to seventh or eighth which would have been a podium. But it’s brilliant for the team we won both races, Mel yesterday and me today, all in all it’s been a pretty good weekend and a solid start.

You were making a lot of time on that stepped wave section, no one of the other guys, even in the top five could live with you there.

In the ten minutes free practice we had I carved a little line, I went inside and then out and went round the rollers, I was able to keep the momentum and get back to inside and triple which was saving loads of time. That’s where I made the pass for the lead it meant you could carry speed into the next corner. He had a perfect opportunity to run it up the inside of me but I think with the momentum going round it was just too fast. it was a big plus there was one lap I didn’t do it and I didn’t close in as much I knew even if I had to go slow the section before I could still gain a lot of time, I kept doing it right to the last lap just to make sure. It’s going to be good, hopefully with my age experience can come into play.

It sets you up well for the British championship, plenty of confidence going into that I’m sure!

Yeah I am looking forward to it getting started. With the first race getting cancelled it has been a long time coming, although it’s been nice to get another race under my belt. We will hopefully come out swinging next weekend with another good result.
