Herlings to contest AMA Nationals to prepare for MXGP?

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeffrey Herlings was having a great season contesting the MXGP World Championship winning the opening two rounds of the series at Matterley Basin and Valkenswaard. With countries going into lockdown, Herlings has only just recently got back on the bike.

It’s hoped that the MXGP World Championship will resume in Russia during the first weekend of August. The AMA Nationals are hoping to start their series in July after the Supercross season and Herlings hasn’t ruled out heading to America to contest a round of the series to prepare for MXGP to resume again.

“I might be able to do some preparation races for the World Championship there (USA), but the first races have also been postponed there again, I read. At the moment nothing is planned besides the World championship and when that starts, god knows”, Herlings told NOS.nl.

If the MXGP World Championship does get pushed back again and the AMA outdoor season does start then Herlings hasn’t ruled out going there to race but will need permission from KTM of course which could prove to be tricky as they’re fully focused on MXGP but it is possible. Another issue could be if he’s allowed to travel or not.

In 2017, Herlings contested the Ironman round of the AMA Nationals and didn’t disappoint as he dominated the event. One thing for sure, Herlings seems eager to get back to the races as soon as possible.
