Herlings on that stunning win – I promised to use my brain but didn’t!

What a dream return for Jeffrey Herlings!

It came down to yet another big battle at the end of the race two between Herlings and Cairoli for the GP win but both went down in the last couple of laps with the pressure on both riders!

But amazingly it was Herlings taking the win despite breaking his collarbone just 17 days ago and Cairoli now nursing an injured thumb!

Herlings said: “Sorry to everyone at home, I promise to use my brain but I didn’t! My fitness was okay but I hadn’t rode in 17 days and the pain was getting more and more, it’s normal, I snapped my collarbone in many places and to come back riding on such a tough track with the heat. It was hard to hold on but we did out best.

“With three laps to go I tipped over and lost the win but two or three turns later Tony tipped over and gave it back to me. I’m very happy with the win, I was so exhausted I couldn’t even get on the podium – next week we will try to use our brain a bit more!”

Cairoli meanwhile held his arm in a goggle sling as he spoke after the race saying: “I was struggling to find the rhythm a bit in the first laps then I found a rhythm and tried to catch Jeffrey but then I made a big crash and hurt my thumb. At the beginning it was not so much pain and I could catch him again then he made a mistake and I passed him, but I was feeling a lot of pain and I couldn’t focus and in the same spot I went over the bars again in a very big crash.

“It’s quite frustrating I know it was time to get some good points but hats off to him, I know he did a very good race and I made a silly mistake. Hopefully the thumb is not so bad and we can line up again next week.”
