Herlings goes 1-1 in Turkey – close to clinching the title

It was another great weekend for Jeffrey Herlings as he yet again went 1-1 during round 18 of the MXGP World Championship.

Herlings comfortably won the first moto as he had a gap of 25 seconds ahead of Antonio Cairoli. In the battle for third and best of the rest in MXGP, Gajser edged out Clement Desalle.

There was drama at the start of the second moto as Antonio Cairoli crashed leaving himself with plenty of work to do from the back of the pack. At the front Herlings looked to have things under control but with around five minutes to go Tim Gajser closed the gap and nothing separated them.

Gajser continued to pressure Herlings but then made a mistake with three laps to go. After the race, Herlings admitted he didn’t feel well for the second race and picked up a stomach bug between moto’s but he still fought through it to go 1-1 yet again.

Cairoli could only muster a fifteenth after his first lap crash which he will be bitterly disappointed about.

Gajser ended up second overall with Clement Desalle rounding off the podium.

It was a good weekend for the Brits with Shaun Simpson and Tommy Searle finishing ninth and tenth overall respectively.

In terms of the championship chase, Herlings has 95 points over Antonio Cairoli so it’s looking like he’ll clinch the title at his home GP in Assen.
