Herlings and Prado win French MXGP

Jeffrey Herlings went 1-1 and ran down race leader Cairoli yet again in race two from seventh to take another impressive win.

Tim Gajser rode strong through to fourth after a medicorce start in race one and followed Cairoli for 15 minutes in race two but couldn’t sustain the pace as Helrlings came charging by.

”Unbelievable, it was awesome. I can’t always get holeshots, it was a great weekend.” commented Herlings who couldn’t believe he had came from seventh on such a tough, rutted track to pass on.

Cairoli this time didn’t put up much of a battle when Herlings made the pass- maybe he is keeping all his energy for Ottobiano in Italy next weekend as the Italian nursed at slight left knee injury following his fall in race one at the British GP last weekend. Herlings now has a 62 point lead in the championship.

Cairoli said: “It was a tough weekend, I didn’t train all week with my knee and I really feel it. Missing training is not the best because the level is so high and Jeffrey is so fit at the moment. The first moto I didn’t make it easy for myself coming through the pack and spent a lot of energy.

“The second moto I tried to stay in front as much as possible but in the last ten minutes I felt very tired and drop my times a lot. Jeffrey is very fit and really pushing in the last ten minutes and I couldn’t hold him.I kept it safe and we try to move on, hopefully the knee is getting better and I can train on a normal schedule.”

In MX2 Jorge Prado went 3-1 to take the overall on a tie-break from Thomas Covington and the impressive 17 year old closed the gap to just 16 points to rival Pauls Jonass who crashed out of the lead in race one and came back to sixth after a below par fourth in race one – the championship is most definitely on in MX2!
