Gatedrop predictions: 2019 British Championship

Andy McKinstry: “Heading into the 2019 British Championship season the MX2 class is shaping up nicely. After clinching the title last year, I can’t look past Conrad Mewse to do the same again in 2019.

I’m very intrigued to see how Dylan Walsh, Alvin Ostlund and Dylan Walsh all perform in the UK series. You’d think they’d all have the speed to win races occasionally but at the same time the UK riders shouldn’t be underestimated on home soil.

With the new blood in the MX2 class it makes it hard to predict, let’s not forget about Martin Barr who goes into the season as the underdog but he has the speed.

With Jake Nicholls not currently back on the bike and Graeme Irwin announcing his retirement the MX1 class isn’t as stacked as it should be. With Shaun Simpson making his return to the series, it’s going to be a battle between the Scot and Tommy Searle. Honestly, it’s hard to choose between the pair.

The only other rider I can see causing a bit of an upset is Hari Kullas who’s had a strong pre-season on his CabScreens Honda. Elliot Banks-Browne would have been a contender too but he has to miss the first round due to an injury from the first round of the MX Nationals series. “

Fatcat MX2:

Championship MX2:

  1. Conrad Mewse

Championship MX1:

  2. Shaun Simpson
  3. Harri Kullas

Jonathan McCready: I think the MX1 class, with all the injuries, you would expect it to come down to Searle and Simpson but Harri Kullas shouldn’t be far away on certain tracks that suit him. Simpson usually has the edge in the sand so could well win round one but Searle might just edge him for the title with Simpson already dealing with a shoulders injury – it’s so close it could come down to who stays healthier!

MX2 with no injuries so far is very deep at the front, but defending champ Conrad Mewse has to be the favourite. He has GP podium speed when he is on top form and that might give him edge over the rest, however the British only boys like Josh Gilbert and Martin Barr are always fast on their home tracks and don’t have the travelling and GP schedule Mewse will have. They just need to get the starts.

For Vaessen, Walsh and Östlund it will all be new in terms of tracks and competitions and a tough schedule  but they are GP riders for a reason and should be fighting for podiums and wins. It’s a very tough class this season with five or six riders all having a legitimate shot at the title.
