The gatedrop team have a good at predicting the MXGP and MX2 World Championship for the 2018 season!

Andy McKinstry: The MXGP World Championship is back this weekend and I can’t wait! It’s a long series and these last few years it’s been all about staying fit throughout nineteen rounds of the tough series.

We unfortunately won’t even see a full line up of riders this weekend in Argentina as the likes of Arnaud Tonus, Jordi Tixier, Valentin Guillod and Tim Gajser miss out through injury which is a shame.

In the MXGP class, it’s going to be a fun season full of mental battles between Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli.  This year Herlings comes into the season 100% fit and for that reason we should see a closer championship battle from the first round which is exciting. I see Cairoli winning the first round as he’s in great form at the moment and Herlings will have last years disaster in the back of his mind – a podium will do the job for the first round.

As for the championship, I’m going with Jeffrey Herlings to do the business, he just has that little bit more raw speed when he needs it.

Who can run with the KTM duo? I certainly think Romain Febvre and Clement Desalle on their day can run with them and win the odd moto – especially in hard pack. Tim Gajser will have nothing to lose when he returns so you’d expect him to win some Grand Prix’s too.

The likes of Max Anstie, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Gautier Paulin, Glenn Coldenhoff and Kevin Strijbos are all quality riders and have the speed to run at the front. It will be tough for them to be as consistent as Herlings and Cairoli – that’s where they have the edge.

As for the MX2 World Championship I’m excited to see the younger generation back in action. Pauls Jonass goes in as heavy favourite after clinching the title last year but the likes of Jorge Prado and Hunter Lawrence will be doing everything they can to stop him.

I’ve been impressed with how strong Jonass has been mentally in the past year and he’s just got that extra bit of experienced so I’m going with him for the title but Lawrence, Prado, Covington and Olsen could and all should win moto’s.

Jonathan McCready:

It’s great to have MXGP back – it’s hard to beat the great outdoors!

Tim Gajser was going to be my pick for Argentina but sadly he got injured and it looks like it has put him out of championship contention as well, a real blow to Tim but also the series, you never want to see guys getting hurt before the season starts.

For MXGP I think it will be hard to look past Cairoli this weekend with the form he has been in but Herlings will push him close, as will Febvre, and Anstie might just challenge for the podium too! For the title I think it will come down to the KTM duo and this year Herilngs might just edge it now he has a years experience. I will go for Cairoli a very close second with Anstie in third.

MX2 might be even more wide open, however ultimately I think Jonass will prevail in the championship with his experience over Lawrence and Olsen. But I think a very motivated and confident Lawrence might take the win at round one this weekend in Argentina! Prado is definitely a wild card here too with brilliant starts as are the Americans, Thomas Covington and Darian Sanayei, who seem love the wide nature of the flowing circuit.
