Five things: The Zwarte Cross

Five things: The Zwarte Cross

1. The huge crowd: The last round of the Dutch Masters creates a huge crowd as it’s ran with the Zwarte Cross festival. It’s a motocross and a music festival at the same time and because of that the crowd is huge! They aren’t lying when they say approximately 200,000 people attend the event – it’s the biggest festival in the Netherlands.

Sure, not every single person watches the motocross but a HUGE number attend the Dutch Masters. I couldn’t believe the amount of people were watching the 85cc’s during their first race on Friday never mind the 250cc and 450cc guys. The atmosphere really is something special and hard to describe. I never thought I’d be blown away at a race more than the Motocross Des Nations but the Zwarte Cross is up there. It’s something every fan should go and see at least once – it’s a super cool weekend.

2. The talent and 85cc young guns: There’s a lot of talent in the Netherlands and that’s been proven as they’ve finished on the box at the Motocross Des Nations for the last two years. When you go to a Dutch Masters it’s not surprising to see why the standard is so good there.

The 85cc class is great, there’s a lot of talent in the class and they all certainly know how to ride the sand. Kay de Wolf clinched the title for the second time and looks like he’ll have a good future. His team mate, Scott Smulders is certainly no slouch either as well as Dave Kooiker. Not much separated those three all weekend.

3. Malcolm Stewart: There was even more extra interest in the MX1 class this weekend with American, Malcolm Stewart competing. It give the MX1 class a boost as Jeffrey Herlings always runs away at the front at the Dutch Masters.

The Dutch fans got see the American take on the best in Holland and Stewart considering it was his first Motocross race in around four years didn’t look out of place. The Suzuki rider ended up seventh overall which was a good weekend for him – hopefully he’ll come back to compete a race somewhere in Europe in the future.

4. Dutch Champions: During the final round of the Dutch Masters, four champions were revealed. Kay de Wolf (85cc), Emil Weckman (125cc), Jago Geerts (MX2) and Jeffrey Herlings (MX1) all clinched the Dutch titles this year – congratulations to them.

5. Lots of racing: The Dutch Masters is usually a one day format but the racing is spread over three days at the Zwarte Cross. It meant the fans got to see more action and in particular of the top guys. The MX2 and MX1 classes had a qualifying race on Saturday which they don’t usually have. The more racing the better!
