Smets & Everts on the state of Motocross in Belgium

In the past Belgium has been one of the main Motocross countries in the world but with the likes of Kevin Strijbos and Jeremy Van Horebeek coming to the end of their career, who will be the next Belgian talents to look out for?

Jago Geerts clearly has a huge future in the sport but outside him and Liam Everts there’s not many coming through the ranks. One reason for this is due to the fact so many tracks have closed in Belgium – there’s now only six! A huge shame for the sport in Belgium.

“For Belgium, in my good days, I had a fan club and they would travel to all the GP’s. There was buses to England, I think we had 3-4 coaches driving up with fans. For many years, they went until my last day and those people I still see today on the track, they go to see Liam”, Everts said in the latest MX World episode.

Everts is disappointed that after he retired from the sport that so many tracks that have disappeared – the 10 times world champion did a lot for the sport in Belgium.

“There were so so many tracks here and now they’ll all gone”, a disappointed Everts said. “They just took them all away from us and that breaks my heart because I’ve been travelling around the world for 18 years having the Belgian flag on the podium. What do we get back now? Nothing”, continued Everts.

“I had my own statue in my home town, we had our track (Neeroeteren), it was a local club that did a lot for the sport. When I was winning they were all there (politicians), two years later they took away the track. It was over. They can take away that statue if they want but just bring back the motocross track”.

Joel Smets also seems worried about the lack of talent coming through and desperately wants Liam Everts to live up to his hype – a lot of pressure on his young shoulders.

“We’ve been waiting for more than a decade for a new World Champion and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen this year or next year. Apart from Jago (Geerts), there’s only Liam left. That’s why us Belgians in the paddock surround Liam because we wish him so badly to become good and win championships”,

“People in Belgium are watching Motocross way less than back in the days from when Stefan and myself raced. At the moment we are lacking that superstar”, Smets stated.
