EMX250: The Preview – Part One!

EMX250: The Preview – Part One!

This weekend the EMX250 Championship gets underway in Italy. In part one of our feature we will take a look at some of the riders to keep an eye on during the course of the season. In part one of the feature we focus on the KTM and Husqvarna riders that should be strong throughout the course of the season.

Last year was Miro Sihvonen’s rookie season in the EMX250 class and ended up sixth overall in the championship with one podium to his name. With Renaux, Van de Moosdijk and Boisrame all injured for the first round that definitely makes Sihvonen one of the favourites for the title. The DIGA KTM rider has looked good in pre-season and dominated the first round of the ADAC German Championship. He will be looking to carry that form into round one of the EMX250 series this weekend. Joining Miro in the DIGA awning will be Roni Kytönen and it will be his rookie season in the class.

One of the most talented riders that will be behind the start gate is young Belgian, Jago Geerts. Jago won the EMX125 series in 2016 and now moves up to the EMX250 class. He looks really good in pre-season and has already beat some top GP riders in the deep sand. Hopefully he has put the hours in on hard pack over winter, if he has don’t be surprised to see him on the podium in Italy and battle for the championship.

Last year didn’t go well at all for Josiah Natzke but he is back for the 2017 season and will be hoping to improve his results big time. He is with the Hitachi KTM UK outfit and showed good speed at the first round of the British Championship. However, the second round didn’t go to plan and he will be looking to get over that and put in two good results in Italy at round one.

Another rider making the jump up to the EMX250 class is Pierre Goupillon. The French man has a good team behind him in the form of VHR KTM. His style should suit the 250cc better, he looks to have gelled well with the bike at the start of the French Elite Championship. The goal for him should be for plenty of top ten results as he is certainly capable.

Two riders that have their rookie year behind them and should be looking for better things in 2017 are Glenn Meier (Kosak KTM) and Dovydas Karka (Creymert KTM). Glenn won some moto’s in the EMX125 class but hasn’t showed that sort of form on the 250cc yet but will be hoping to improve from his 2016 rookie season. Dovydas will be hoping to score more than the two points he secured in 2016 and the Creymert KTM outfit do a good job improving the riders they sign.

Young French rider Tom Vialle took the decision to race a 250cc last year as a learning year but only competed in France. This year he has decided to compete in the European scene, he is a talented kid and still very young at just fifteen years old he has a lot of potential and will be looking to learn as much as possible during his rookie season in the class. Unfortunately, he picked up an injury at third round of the French Elite championship so will miss the first two rounds of the EMX250 series but he will join the action from round three.

The Silver Action KTM team have Yuri Quarti and Davide Cislaghi in their ranks. Yuri makes the step up from the EMX125 class but was injured for a lot of the pre-season. Due to the injury he might be a little behind in preparation so the first few rounds could be a struggle. Cislaghi competed in a lot of MX2 World Championship races last year and was battling for points, he is capable of top ten results in the EMX250 class throughout the course of the season. He could end up racing MX2 yet as the team’s MX2 rider, Davide Bonini is out for the season so the team may decide to replace him.

An ex EMX150 rider, Jere Haavisto has secured himself a pretty good ride with the 137 Motorsport team for the season ahead. He has adjusted to life pretty good since making the step to the bigger bike and like many riders could get top ten results during the course of the season.

Young Italian, Morgan Lesiardo wanted to contest around eight MX2 World Championship races this year but he couldn’t get an entry for Italy this weekend. Instead he will do the EMX250 and if he gets a top ten result will focus on that series. The Italian clearly has talent as David Philippaerts signed him for his team last year. Morgan is on a KTM this year and looks good in pre-season despite a shoulder injury.

Another Italian to look out for is Joakin Furbetta, the privateer was strong in the EMX125 class a few years ago but has struggled with some injuries since moving to the 250cc. Hopefully this year he can stay fit for the duration of the season.

There are three Polish riders to keep an eye on this year. Szymon Staszkiewicz and Karol Kruszyński will be racing for a new team in the form of Bauerschmidt KTM. Szymon makes the move up from the EMX125 class and will be looking to learn as much as he can in the class.  Gabriel Chetnicki will be one to watch out for, he has lots of talent but hasn’t been able to stay fit since switching to the 250cc. Unfortunately, he has a small knee injury at the moment so won’t be present at round one but hopefully he will join the action from round two onwards.

One rider that is really fast in Spain is Simeo Ubach but he just hasn’t been able to figure out the EMX250 class just yet. This could be the year it clicks for him in the European scene so it’s worth looking out for him.

The DIGA-PROCROSS Huqvarna squad have an impressive line-up with French rider, Adrien Malaval and Aussie, Caleb Grouthues. Both have the potential for top ten results on their day. Caleb has been riding a lot of sand since moving from Australia to try and adapt. Both riders should be strong in hard pack conditions.

An ex EMX250 Champ, Mel Pocock will race the first round of the series on his REVO Husqvarna. Pocock won the title back in 2012 but has been through a lot since then. It’s great seeing Pocock riding well again and hopefully he puts in some good results as we see him contest the full series.

Come back tomorrow for part two of this feature where we will take a look at riders from the other manufactures that could be a threat.
