Cooper Webb on that last turn race-winning pass on Roczen!

“Statement.” That’s how Ricky Carmichael described Cooper Webb’s fantastic ride from seventh to first with a nerve-wrecking final turn pass to win an unforgettable main event in Arlington, Texas at round seven of the 2019 supercross series.

And Carmichael should know. The five-time supercross champ had a similar moment when he came from even further back to run-down Jeremy McGrath, the king of supercross, at Anaheim back in 2001, RC would go on to win every race for the rest of the year and his first supercross title.

Whether Webb will be able to dominate like that remains to be seen with such stiff competition in the class but he has now won four of the seven races this season and that that win at Arlington is without doubt the most impressive supercross race of his career.

“I knew it was going to come down to the whoops, I could tell where I would catch him a little bit and where he would pull a little bit. I was able to do that quad into the turn (before the whoops) a few times but I wasn’t sure if I could do it following him probably guarding the inside,” commented Webb on the lead up to the pass on Ken Roczen that won him the race by two hundredths of a second!

“So I followed in behind him and I knew he was probably going to jump (through the whoops), so I went to the left and tried to skim. I knew he had the inside and kind of unfortunately knew what was going to happen in the final turn, but as a racer you never know which direction he is going to go, or I will go. I saw the opening, and yeah dang, what a close race! I didn’t think I’d actually won until I saw it on the big screen, yeah it was an incredible race for sure,” smiled Webb as he re-lived the moment.

On realising he could catch the leaders once he was into third, Webb said: “It went through my head, ( to settle for third) there was not a huge gap but still a gap to the guys ( Musquin and Roczen) but one lap I bit quite a lot into the gap and thought, ‘okay we have a lot of laps left.’ I had a few moments of getting squirrely but I knew if I gave it my all, whatever the position I would be happy, but it’s crazy how it turned out.”

“It’s been a real turnaround, the bike is incredible, the team is really incredible, and really just the program with Aldon and riding with Marvin and all the guys,” explained Webb on what has changed in 2019. “Riding with those guys every day has made me a bette rider and better person. I just learn so much from everybody and luckily I am able to apply it to the races. It was a whole new change for me and a new mindset and it’s obviously going really well.”

Webb says he isn’t thinking about the championship yet and just wants to do his best at each round, but he is the man of the moment in the series and has all the momentum and confidence he needs to win this title.
