Coldenhoff on his Lommel podium

Glenn Coldenhoff of the Standing Construct KTM team collected his first MXGP podium of the season at Lommel in Belgium. In extremely challenging conditions, with a rough track coupled to searing heat, the rider from Heesch proved his mettle with two third places, which netted him third overall.

“The last two weeks have really gone smoothly. I had the opportunity to prepare well for this event, and the team and I worked hard together. We made a lot of progress in a number of areas, and I rode with great confidence. I even claimed one holeshot, and it’s been a good while since THAT has happened. I can’t thank the team enough for all they have done,” Coldenhoff said.

Glenn tries to conserve his energies during the qualifying sessions, knowing that a heavy day lay in wait. “I started off slowly, but gradually found my rhythm. Looking back, it was maybe not the best strategy, and I only qualified ninth. In discussions with the team on Saturday evening, we decided that I would come out swinging for the races.”

After a good warm-up, Glenn put his money where his mouth was, and claimed a holeshot in race one. For a long while, he kept pace with the two leaders, Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser, former world champions both. He later on had to drop the pace somewhat, but was still well placed to claim third, opening up the possibility of an overall podium finish.

Glenn started off the second race in equally determined fashion. After a short tussle, he again moved into third spot, and kept the plot upright until the flag fell for an exhausted and relieved field of riders. He had achieved his goal. The podium finish in the team’s home GP was his.

Glenn is currently seventh in the world standings, but only nine points separates him from the fifth-placed rider. A fifth place in the final world standings would be great,” he mused. “We’ve been looking at this potential scenario for a few weeks now. I’ve gained 12 points on Arminas Jasikonis, but Romain Febvre in turn is just behind me in the standings, so we will need to work hard and continue scoring well.”

The world championship series continues in Imola, Italy, in two weeks’ time.
