Catching up with Vsevolod Brylyakov

Catching up with Vsevolod Brylyakov

Russia have a top talent in Vsevolod Brylyakov as he burst into the MX2 World Championship scene when JTech Honda took a chance on the kid and it paid off. Steve Dixon has worked with a lot of top riders and can spot a talent when he sees one. He decided to sign Brylyakov for the 2016 season as his only MX2 World Championship rider.

Before his injury this year which has ruled him out of the last four GP’s he impressed on the Dixon Kawasaki and got himself on the overall podium at the Mexico GP with a third overall.

Brylyakov has been working very hard with his trainer, Roberto Manzaroli at Full Gas Motorsports, the Russian kid trains very hard and works on his body condition. Before the season he had a good program going in America which helped him coming into this season. There is no doubt about his talent and the 2017 season could turn into one to remember.

We decided to catch up with Brylyakov to talk about his season prior to the injury and his progress with the injury. There is some good news as he’s now back riding again!

Gatedrop: We are here watching at Assen, you must be frustrated being a spectator?

Vsevolod Brylyakov: Yeah of course, it’s not really nice to watch everybody riding. It is frustrating and disappointing for me but it is what it is. Injuries happen but I am just looking forward to being back at the races.

Gatedrop: For the people that don’t know can you talk me through the full extent of your injury?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Yeah, as soon as I got hurt I was thinking about coming back pretty early, earlier than everyone thought and even myself. I tried to not tell anyone what kind of injury I got. I met a few different doctors at different hospitals and medical centres and the situation was then clear. I had two broken bones in the ankle, it was pretty bad. Everyone said that I should be off the bike for three months, six weeks in the cast and six weeks for recovery, to start walking again.  I definitely got better earlier. I spent like four/five weeks getting treatment and then started cycle and doing some stuff.  So, yeah the injury was bad but we had a fast recovery and I’m back on the bike earlier than anyone can guess.

Gatedrop: I believe you are back on the bike now; do you already feel good on the bike or do you think it will take time?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Yeah, we got back on the bike on Friday (26th August). I was definitely happy to be back on the bike again, I didn’t really want to stop, I wanted to ride until I got an empty tank! For me, it was strange, I even expected to be a little bit worse or having some pain or being uncomfortable on the bike but I came back pretty fast.  To be honest it didn’t really feel like I was coming back from being injured. My ankle was no problem, the speed and condition is also there still.  I’m pretty happy with that because I feel like I’m still able to compete. Sure, the season is finished for me with just the Des Nations to go but I’m just glad this injury went well for me and that I’m still in a good shape.

Gatedrop: Before the injury were you happy with how the season was going or did you want a little bit more?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  The beginning of the season was good. We made a good step and growing up race by race like going eighth, seventh, sixth. The podium too, good races and good speed. In qualification in Spain I had a small crash but I still had the speed. At around midseason we went a little bit down, I messed up the training and preparation and stuff but I still felt good and could still fight in the top ten. I was still able to keep my seventh place in the championship; it definitely could be better but we have done the best we could.  I am actually pretty happy about the season I have done and especially the races at the start of the season.  I am really looking forward to next season now, this was the first year learning with the Kawasaki and working with Steve Dixon.  I have been learning how to work with him and Steve has been learning how to work with me. Hopefully next year we go better because we definitely can. The bikes are very good and my condition is also very good so we just have to put everything together.

Gatedrop: You got your first MX2 overall podium this year, how did that feel?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Ah yeah, I have said many times it was like a dream for me. I was always thinking of what I would do if I was on the box, it was just amazing. I only realised when everything was finished, every interview. When I went back to the paddock to my team that was when I realised I got it and I understood everything, it was just amazing. Even when I finished the second moto I didn’t know I was going to be on the podium because I crashed and came back from like thirteenth place to sixth, I was trying to catch another rider on the last lap to get me another point for the podium chase. It happened a good way for me and I got third overall so it was amazing.

Gatedrop: You are the only MX2 rider Steve Dixon was running this year, that comes with a lot of pressure but you were able to deal with it well..

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Yeah, I was the only MX2 rider in the tent but we also have Dylan Ferrandis and Petar Petrov. We had three riders for Kawasaki, it was more like we were riding altogether for the one brand.  I don’t think I had any pressure but I dealt with the expectations for this year as I did everything that Steve asked of me.  No, I didn’t really have pressure, no one ever told me that I had to go faster because I did everything I can all the time. I think I was doing a good job this year, there were somethings I was missing like the starts but whenever I started in the top ten, I could battle for the podiums. There were a lot of lessons this year and we made steps forward day by day.

Gatedrop:  Before the season you spent a lot of time in America. Did you enjoy riding with Tommy Searle every day and working hard with your trainer?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Yeah, it was amazing. USA is a nice place to go riding, the nice weather always makes it possible to ride and the tracks are always prepared well.  It definitely really helped and I’m really looking forward to going back this year to make the same program because it worked.

Gatedrop:  You have some good memories racing the Motocross of Nations in Latvia and you will also ride for Russia this year, you must be excited to represent your country again?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  Yeah, it will be great. Me, Bobby and Tonkov is the best team we can get for the Nations at the moment.  We can definitely fight for the podium with this team and I’m really looking forward to it. With Bobby in the open class, Tonkov in MXGP and myself in MX2 it’s going to be a really nice team. The nations is always an exciting race because everything is new, a new bike design, new gear design and a lot of new riders racing from the likes of America, Australia and New Zealand. Lots of countries are coming and it’s a chance to prove what your worth in the championship and what your worth in the world.

Gatedrop: Are you disappointed that you can’t ride the USA GP’s and ride against new competitors?

Vsevolod Brylyakov:  For sure, it would be a good experience for me to ride in USA at Charlotte and Glen Helen but it is what it is. Sure, I came back early from my injury but you still need a good preparation before you race. I don’t think I’ve lost speed or condition but a second or half a second could still cost me something. I don’t want to risk it, we decided with Steve that we wouldn’t go but I will prepare to be ready for the Nations.
