British Championship: Gatedrop predictions!

British Championship: Gatedrop predictions!

Jonathan McCready: It has been a long winter for most of the British championship guys and, with the MX Nationals cancelled last weekend, they have had to wait one weekend longer to get their season under way.

MX2 is exciting this year with Ben Watson back form injury and looking to get his first title, we also have his teammate Josiah Natzke coming into the championship and he should certainly be among the front runners as should Aussie MX2 GP rider, Jay Wilson and Kevin Woutts the experienced Belgian.

Mel Pocock will make his first full season from his horrific injury a couple of years ago and what a story that would be if he took the championship while Martin Barr came close last season only for a couple of crashes to put him out of the running, but his speed was on point.

This season I think I will go for Martin Barr to win, he came close last year, has championship experience now and if he learns from last season shouldn’t have too many weaknesses. Ben Watson could be seen as the favourite but with so many GP rounds plus the British championship it could take it’s toll and make it hard to stay healthy, however Ben’s speed will should be impressive. Harri Kullas will have GP level speed too but can he remain in contention racing both classes?

Like last year there are a lot of guys who could win races and this year it should be an international battle for championship victory!

With Tommy Searle missing round one it leaves the championship more wide open than originally thought. Jake Nicholls has two GPs already under his belt and would appear to be the favourite now but you know Searle will be determined to make the points up when he gets back, it’s just a question of if he can return quickly and on form to be in contention. Kristian Whatley has natural talent most can only dream of and knows how to win this championship, but does he have the application and mental strength to run with the GP boys of Nicholls and Searle in every round?

Graeme Irwin certainly has the application and determination to get the job done on the Buildbase Honda, but like last season it might be hard to stay on the pace of Nicholls and Searle at every round without racing GPs every week. But if anyone can Graeme might be the man to take the title away from the GP men!

Elliot-Banks Browne hasn’t had the best of seasons in recent years but still has the talent and experience to be up there as does Steven Lenoir and Brad Anderson. But can they put a consistent season together to challenge for the title?

Andy McKinstry: This weekend is the start of the British Championship as round one hits Culham, it’s prediction time! In MX2, I can’t look past Ben Watson for the championship. He has had every chance of winning it the last couple of years but just can’t stay fit. If he can manage to stay fit then I think it’s going to be very hard to stop him, he comes into the first round after showing good speed in Qatar and Indonesia too.

Plenty of others guys are capable of winning moto’s – Barr, Natzke, Kullas, Pocock and Wouts the pick of the bunch. It will be interesting to see how Natzke can perform as the British riders are very fast in their home spoil, it wasn’t that long again that Petrov struggled racing this series.

MX2 at Culham:

  1. Ben Watson
  2. Martin Barr
  3. Harri Kullas

MX2 Championship:

  3. Josiah Natzke

With Tommy Searle out for the first round it’s going to be very tough for him to win the title, he would need to win every single moto I feel when he returns to have a chance and that’s a big ask. It’s hard to look past Jake Nicholls for the title, he should be even better than last year and the fact that he is racing MXGP will help him improve his speed.

Graeme Irwin and Kristian Whatley will be right on Nicholls heels though and with the short races you can’t afford a bad start.  Irwin and Whatley are capable of winning a few rounds of the series. You can’t overlook Steven Lenoir as he has the speed to run with them and the switch to Kawasaki should be positive for him. Elliot Banks-Browne hasn’t showed us what he is really capable of yet since moving up to the MX1 class, is this the year he can finally show us what he can do on his Geartec Husqvarna?

MX1 at Culham:

  1. Jake Nicholls
  2. Graeme Irwin
  3. Steven Lenoir

MX1 Championship:

  3. Kristian Whatley

Paul McCready: “Ben Watson has plenty of speed but he has to prove he can survive a full season. So I’m picking Martin Barr to finally clinch a British Chmapionship. Watch out for Pocock, I think he could surprise at a few rounds.”

MX2 Culham:

  1. Ben Watson
  2. Martin Barr
  3. Kullas

MX2 Championship:

  1. Martin Barr
  2. Ben Watson
  3. Mel Pocock

“It’s hard to look past the GP boys, I think they have an advantage learning that wee bit extra every weekend at the World Championship. Graeme Irwin has mentioned this before and is hopeful of competing at a few MXGP’s this year to help improve himself. Tommy will miss the 1st round but I expect him to get straight to winning ways when he returns.”

MX1 Culham:

  1. Jake Nicholls
  2. Graeme Irwin
  3. Steven Lenior

MX1 Championship:

  1. Jake Nicolls
  2. Tommy Searle
  3. Graeme Irwin
