British Championship – Duns preview
RHL Activities is gearing up to head north this week for the sixth round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship on Sunday July 29 at the Duns track in Scotland.
Two weekends ago the Duns circuit played host to the Junior British Championships, the Judd KTM British Youth National Championship Powered by Parts Europe and the Steve Benton Transport British Under 21 Championship, which provided some first class racing from the UK’s elite youth riders. With the pro ranks hitting the hardpack, Scottish terrain this weekend, we are sure to see some bar banging racing, as the fight for victory in each of the series continues.
With four rounds to go the championships are hotting up. In the MX1 class Buildbase Honda rider Jake Nicholls currently holds the red plate as the championship heads to Scotland this weekend. Nicholls has a 19-point lead ahead of Lombard Express Suzuki’s Evgeny Bobryshev in second and Hitachi ASA KTM UK’s Graeme Irwin, who is a further 10 points behind, in third. With Nicholls concentrating on the British championship, whilst Bobryshev and Irwin (both former British MX1 Champions) are contesting the jam-packed calendar of the Grand Prix series on the world stage, it will be interesting to see who is crowned champion come the end of the season.
In the Maxxis British MX2 class Hitachi ASA KTM UK’s Conrad Mewse is currently dominating the category after taking seven of the eight race wins for the first half of the Maxxis ACU British Championship. A recent leg injury may make Sunday’s proceedings more challenging for the youngster, while Buildbase Honda’s Joshua Gilbert holds second place in the standings with a deficit of 31 points and it’s sure he will want to maximise the situation with Mewse’s recent misfortune. Revo Husqvarna UK’s Mel Pocock currently lies third in the series going into this weekend.
In addition to the Maxxis British MX1 and MX2 Championships there will be the MXY2 support class running alongside the British races with competition from youngsters making the step from the youth to the adult ranks. It’s sure to be a day of great action for spectators.
