Ben Watson on his podium – I thought I was fourth again!

PR- Ben Watson took his maiden GP-podium on Spring & Labor Day at the Grand Prix of Russia in Orlyonok, alongside the Black Sea. The Briton claimed an overall third place after a third and a sixth place in the two motos of the MX2 class. It was also the first GP-podium of the year for Kemea Yamaha. The 18-year-old Jago Geerts managed to finish inside the top 10 again, taking a ninth place (12+9) overall. Unfortunately Vsevolod Brylyakov, who was racing for his home crowd, had a lot of bad luck. The Russian twisted his leg in the second moto and sustained an ankle and knee injury. He will have extra examinations the next days.
The Grand Prix started perfect with the Kemea-boys on four (Brylyakov), five (Geerts) and six (Watson) in the qualifying race on Monday.
One day later, Geerts and Watson took a blistering start in the first moto. The Belgian was in third position, with his British teammate just behind him and only the two KTM’s of Prado and Jonass in front of them. Brylyakov, on the other hand, had bad luck. The Russian was involved in a crash and had to fight back from 22nd position.
Watson passed Geerts for third position and kept a good rhythm all moto long. His second podium in a moto, after Portugal a few weeks ago.
Geerts was following his teammate for six laps during that first moto, but a small mistake – he got stuck in some mud an crashed – did cost him a lot of places. He dropped from 4th to 14th place and finally finished 12th. Meanwhile Brylyakov was – as a raging bull – making up lost ground. He passed a lot of riders, finishing in 9th place.
Watson took another good start in the second moto (fourth), but lost three places in the first two laps. The Briton managed to move up one place, which secured him of the third step on the podium. Geerts finished ninth in the second moto.
Meanwhile, Brylyakov twisted his leg, without crashing, just before halfway race. The Russian immediately pulled out the race and visited the doctor on the track. Diagnosis: an ankle (a small fracture) and a knee injury. Seva is now on his way to Moscow to visit his doctor, who will determine the gravity of the injury.
Team owner Hans Corvers had mixed emotions. “I feel sorry for Seva. He worked so hard, but luck is not on his side. Let’s hope that his injury is not too bad. We will know more in one or two days. On the other hand, I’m very thrilled with the performance of Watson. At the beginning of the season we expected Ben to finish between fifth and eighth place. But he’s doing much better. That means that we have to adjust our goals. We are aiming for top five with Ben. Same story for Geerts. He can aim on a spot in the top 10 now.”

“I’m so disappointed, so frustrated. I twisted my leg in the second moto and hurt my ankle and knee. I’m really in pain. Especially my knee is hurting a lot. I’m now on my way to see my doctor in Moscow. I will have some extra examinations the next days. I really hope and pray for the best. I came a long way after my severe shoulder injury last year. Ik hope I won’t be out too long this time. Keep your fingers crossed.”

“My weekend was pretty good with, again, a top 10 overall. But it was a pity that I crashed in the first moto. I really had a good feeling, but made a small mistake. I got stuck in some mud and crashed. Of course I’m a bit dissapointed about that, but yeah, that’s part of the learning process I’m going through this year. In the second moto I wasted a lot of time behind Larranaga, which gave Rubini the opportunity to close the gap and pass me in the last lap.”

“My first GP-podium ever! What a great feeling, what a great day. When I crossed the line I dind’t realise that I was on the podium. I thought I was fourth again. Then teamowner Hans came running towards me. Podium, podium, he shouted. Fantastic! Especially on this track, which I don’t like that much. I really want to thank everybody in the team. For the opportunity they gave me and for all their hard work. I’m glad I can give them something back now. There was only one thing missing today: my family. They stayed at home, in the UK. There’s only one solution: repeat this performance when they are around.”

“A Grand Prix with mixed emotions. On one hand we are all very happy with the third place of Watson. His first ever and the first for Kemea in 2018.  On the other hand we are sad that Brylyakov injured himself, in front of his home crowd. Hopefully it won’t be too bad. About Watsons podium: to be honest, that came a bit faster than I expected. Ben made a lot of improvement during the winter, together with our physical coach Jacky Vimond. And that’s paying off now. He really deserves this first podium. I’m also very pleased with the performance of Geerts. He is taking big steps forwards week by week. A ninth place on this difficult circuit is a very good result.”
