Baggett: The goal was to break Tomac!

Blake Baggett said he wanted to “break” Eli Tomac in the second moto of round three of the US motocross championship at Thunder Valley, Colorado, because that is what Tomac had been doing to his rivals!

The BTO Sports KTM rider stalked Tomac before putting a blistering pass on the Colorado native around the outside and then pulling away for a sensational win.

Baggett later said he felt good all day and wanted to give Tomac a taste of his own medicine. “From the first lap of practice I just felt good today. I felt like I had the speed (on Tomac), he had it going in the first few laps so I didn’t put up much of a fight and let him lead. From there I got in a good pace an found some good lines, I was able to search around behind him and found lines I didn’t have in the first moto.

“The goal was to do what he has done to us many times and that was break him, that’s the bottom line.” admitted Baggett. “That’s what he as done to all of us a lot. I felt like today was the day to do it. When he gets a lot of confidence he gets on a roll.”

Baggett also said that his second place at Glen Helen gave him the confidence to go for the win this weekend at round three: “After riding with Jason (Anderson) at Glen Helen, I could see what I needed to work on, I could see that we had a pretty big gap and that I had the pace and the speed. So I went back and worked on a few things on the bike. The goal is to win races. I’ve done it before so it’s not like I was trying to do something I have never done before but it’s a new bike, new team so I was still trying to get everything figured out to what I like.”

Baggett had also put in a stunning performance in race one coming from a first turn crash to take third place by the flag in superb come-from-behind ride.

The overall victory puts Baggett, a former 250 national champion, up to third in the points and right in contention for the 450 title only 19 behind championship leader Musquin and just two behind Tomac after three rounds of the series.
