250 US motocross preview!

250 US motocross preview!

The 250 class, with four factory level bikes for nearly every major manufacturer, is absolutely wide open this season!

Two-time champion Jeremy Martin will be on the Geico Honda and, despite another poor supercross season, should be ready to rip when the gate drops at Hangtown. Martin has the experience but the youngsters are all hungry and will be snapping at his heels.

Austin Forkner is in his second season and won the final round of the season in 2016. He finished fourth overall but learnt from mistakes quickly. Despite and average supercross season, America’s most talented teenager could well challenge for the outdoor title in 2017, he is aggressive but smart and should be even better than last season!

Then you have Joey Savatgy and Zach Osborne. Let’s just they aren’t exactly friends after what happened in Vegas and you can be sure Savatgy will want some redemption in the outdoors and maybe even a bit of revenge on Osborne, expect some aggressive racing between the two! Savatagy was leading the Nationals during the early part of the season last year but couldn’t keep it going so he will want to turn things around and show everyone he can close out a title.

Osborne is a former GP and US race winner outdoors, he knows he has the speed and if his bike can be more reliable than it was last season, and his extra confidence carries from supercross (plus his fitness from Aldon Baker) Zach should have all the pieces in place to go for his second title of the year.

Adam Cianciarulo made through last season’s outdoor racing and this season’s supercross series unscathed and as always comes into every season brimming with self-confidence. His win in Vegas only added to that and he genuinely believes he’s the best rider on the track. If he gets a win early Adam could be a title challenger but he should definitely be a potential race winner.

Then you have the MX2 GP rider, Dylan Ferrandis. The Frenchman has shown good speed outdoors in the world championship so that shouldn’t be his problem in the states. But can he adjust to a hectic one-day format, learn the tracks and take the humidity all in one season to challenge for the title? He also needs to stay injury free, something he couldn’t do in the GPs.

The speed should be there but it might be too much to expect Dylan to win the title in his first season. Podiums and race wins should be in the equation for the enigmatic but very fast Frenchman.

His teammate Aaron Plessinger is fast. He loves the ruts and has the fitness, but, a bit like Benoit Paturel in MX2 GPs, can he get the good starts often enough to contend for the title? That remains to be seen, but Plessinger has the raw ingredients to challenge for the title.

Pro-Circuit Kawasaki’s Justin Hill is a bit of a question mark. He has great technical skills, proven by his supercross title but has admitted he prefers supercross and riding a 450. So a 250 outdoors is his least favourite option! But if his fitness is there and he gets inspired by early season success, Hill should be capable of challenging for podiums week-in, week-out.

The KTM team have a Jordon Smith and Shane McElrath leading their charge, both coulda, woulda, should won the their respective supercross series but it didn’t happen for either. McElreath is a hard worker and has elevated his game this year and should be among the front runners but we are waiting to see if Jordon Smith can last the gruelling 30 minute motos twice a day for 12 roudns without crashes or mistakes. He has shown in flashes that the speed is there but the consistency is still his question mark.

Alex Martin is one of the favourites for the title. Pic: KTM

Alex Martin has went to the TLD KTM team too and after coming-of-age last season will surely be gunning for the title in 2017. Whether that is a step too far for Alex with the next generation coming through remains to be seen, but Alex has the work ethic and another good bike to put himsef in good position for this outdoor season.

Add in riders like Martin Davolos, Mitchell Oldenburg, Chase Sexton, RJ Hampshire, Mitchell Harrison. Colt Ncholls and more who can all get in amongst it with a decent start.

The first round especially should be pretty epic and extra aggressive with a lot of the names just mentioned believing this is their time to win outdoors!
