2019 supercross predictions

2019 supercross predictions

Jonathan McCready: There are a lot of title contenders this year but none of them appear to be a sure thing, which makes the 2019 championship a wide open year on paper as A1 looms.

Eli Tomac is the fastest but usually has some very bad days or a big crash, Jason Anderson might be the smartest but can he run the pace if Tomac if a title depends on it? Marvin Musquin is always there but is coming in with a knee injury and questionable in certain whoop sections while Ken Roczen still needs to show he can get through a supercross year uninjured but if he can should be a title contender.

I think Tomac, despite rumours of a pre-season injury, might be able fix the bad races enough to prevent a consistent Anderson from retaining his title with Roczen completing the full season for third overall.

Added to a very deep field this year are the rookies Justin Hill, Aaron Plessinger, Joey Savatgy and Zach Osborne after he comes back from his broken collarbone. Hill I think could have the speed of the title contenders at times but might be the most inconsistent of the rookies. Savatgy should be solid and Plessinger usually builds his way into a new class but the 450 should suit him really well.

Cooper Webb needs a big year after two poor ones at Yamaha, Cole Seely was looking very good last year until his injury but had some good speed in pre-season. Malcolm Stewart is apparently doing some training this year so might be in the mix in the main events. Justin Barcia expects himself to be a contender for the title but it might take some good results early to get the momentum going. Blake Baggett has upped his supercross game the last two years and Justin Bogle has another chance at a factory team, albeit with only a week on the bike. Chad Reed is back once again and can’t be ruled out either of making the podium on a good day and neither can Deal Wilson despite being back to privateer status,

The field, at least for the first few rounds until the inevitable injuries begin, is stacked!

In the 250 class I think Adam Cianciarulo might finally win the title even if Dylan Ferrandis might have similar speed, the Frenchman tends not to have the consistency. Shane McElrath has had some bad luck the last few seasons that kept him from winning the title and he will be expecting to be in position to go for it again and might be Cianciarulo’s biggest competition unless Ferrandis keeps it on two wheels.

Andy McKinstry: Heading into the first round of the AMA Supercross series of 2019 there’s no real clear cut favourite which is always pretty exciting.

However, the four names I see it coming down to are Ken Roczen, Jason Anderson, Eli Tomac and Marvin Musquin. Last year Jason Anderson was a real surprise and won the championship – will he be able to do it again? Honestly, I think he can due to his consistency. He knows when to take third or a fourth on a bad day and that’s a great quality to have.

Tomac is probably the fastest out of all four of them but doesn’t seem to deal with pressure too well. It’s pretty crazy he still hasn’t won this championship because speed isn’t the issue. He’ll hope to be stronger mentally this year and that could make the difference.

Last year Ken Roczen made his return to racing and considering everything he went through, he had a good season. I really do think Roczen will win his fair share of races this year and will be a championship threat.

I haven’t predicted Musquin to finish in the top three at A1 or the championship and it’s really hard to leave him out! On his day he can win and if everything clicks he can certainly challenge for the title so it shows how wide open the championship is for the season ahead.

When you add in the likes of Cooper Webb, Justin Barcia, Blake Baggett and the rookies moving up it’s a stacked field.

Due to his consistency I’m going to go with Jason Anderson for the title!
